There's been a lot of excitement around AMD's 4000-series processors and the Asus TUF Gaming A15 is the first gaming laptop to land in India with it. Our review finds the processor to be a beast of a performer, improving performance across a host of metrics but as much as 100 per cent. Our gameplay testing found the laptop to deliver very good frame rates and our Lightroom render times were reduced by half in comparison to everything we've tested in the mid-range gaming segment. The keyboard and trackpad on this machine are nice and the port selection is fairly generous, as is their left-side-heavy placement. Asus has used a generous amount of copper all throughout the insides to keep the temperatures well under control. Lastly, the Gaming A15 is also user upgradeable as far as storage and RAM are concerned, future-proofing the laptop to some extent, especially if you're getting yourself a lower-end model.

We found this notebook to perform very well in usual compute tasks, but it failed to meet the mark in games. If ASUS was to introduce a GTX 1660Ti variant for the Singapore market instead, we would have a clear and firm recommendation for our readers. However, this time, we would only recommend the ASUS TUF Gaming A15 if you need the raw compute performance of the Ryzen 7 4800H and wouldn’t mind gaming at a lower graphics quality.

Uiteraard is het even afwachten of de straatprijzen die beloftes waar gaan maken, ik wil in deze crisistijd niet helemaal op de zaken vooruit lopen natuurlijk en als de A15 opeens veel duurder wordt dan alternatieven met vergelijkbare specs verandert het spel. Maar de A15 belooft er zeker één te worden waar je echt scherp op wilt letten de komende weken. Dat je dan zelf dan maar WiFi 6 in moet schroeven (kosten: 2 tientjes voor een AX200 chip) moet je dan maar even door de vingers zien, concessies bij andere laptops in zijn prijsklasse waren tot dusver altijd groter.

Maar de A15 belooft er zeker één te worden waar je echt scherp op wilt letten de komende weken. Dat je dan zelf dan maar WiFi 6 in moet schroeven (kosten: 2 tientjes voor een AX200 chip) moet je dan maar even door de vingers zien, concessies bij andere laptops in zijn prijsklasse waren tot dusver altijd groter.

Here, you won’t get a Thunderbolt certification (although the USB Type-C port supports 3.1 (Gen. 2) speeds and a DisplayPort 1.4 output), and there is no SD card reader on board. Yes, the laptop would get more expensive if it gets the former, and you can always snatch a deal on a USB to SD card reader dongle for no more than 5 bucks. However, it is good to have it onboard.

As for the downsides then, like I mentioned, these are pretty minor. The SSD is one, as it is ‘only’ PCIe 3.0, when PCIe 4.0 drives are available. I’d also liked to have seen better discrete buttons on the trackpad as they are definitely on the spongey side. Lastly, the screen isn’t quite perfect, with slightly aberrant gamma and colour temperature results. All of those issues could be easily looked past however, so I’d actually say the biggest reason not to get the A15 would be because the Strix G15 Advantage is currently so keenly priced. For just £1699 at Currys right now, you could get a machine offering a Ryzen 5900HX and Radeon RX 6800M, a combination which proved faster than the TUF Gaming A15 in every game we tested. We’re not sure if this a permanent price, but with very competitive pricing on the G15 Advantage overall, it is definitely something to consider if you can stretch to it.

All these make the 2021 A15 a more versatile mid-range laptop, quieter and more efficient with daily use, and at the same time faster with demanding loads and games. It still runs hot, though, even if Asus tweaked slightly tweaked the thermal design between generations, and is also more expensive now, at least in this top-specced configuration with the higher tier specs. One final aspect I’ll mention is that Asus haven’t announced the official prices and availability of these new TUFs, which were mostly a silent launch. Based on availability from other OEMs, I’d expect these in stores around March 2020, with the Ryzen 7 + RTX 3060 configurations probably starting at around $1200 =/- $100. Archive.org versionOne final aspect I’ll mention is that Asus haven’t announced the official prices and availability of these new TUFs, which were mostly a silent launch. Based on availability from other OEMs, I’d expect these in stores around March 2020, with the Ryzen 7 + RTX 3060 configurations probably starting at around $1200 =/- $100. This is a great machine in terms of performance and price balance. It cuts here and there but, it does not compromise what is really important on a gaming laptop. This laptop is an ideal device for students who want also to game, light video editing, and gamers out of the box. The dedicated GPU, SSD, dual-channel upgradable 8GB fast memory (at 3200MHz), 144Hz screen, and CPU that competes with a desktop’s CPU performance, all of these at about 700 bucks is just unheard of. Oh and an Ethernet port on a laptop! If you want a portable form-factor of a desktop gaming PC and a good value “gaming” machine, then this FA506IH-AS53 is your choice!

Yes, the TUF A15 is slightly bulky and not very portable, but it serves the function it has been made, which is effortless lag-free casual gaming. It has the gamer vibe and plenty of features such as Adaptive Sync to bring out the best as far as graphical tasks are considered. The display could have been brighter, the speakers louder and battery life a lot better, but the average gamer looking for an entry into this segment will likely be unperturbed by these niggles. I can safely say that the ASUS TUF A15 is one of the best options for entry-level gaming in the market.

R7 4800H: A laptop-grade octa-core APU with SMT-enabled Zen 2 cores clocked at 2.9 GHz to 4.2 GHz and a Vega series graphics adapter with 7 CUs clocked at up to 1,600 MHz.
