Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 Desktop Graphics Card Review

Fast enough for Full HD! Now the mining boom has subsided, enormous amounts of used graphics cards are starting to hit the market. In this review, we take a look at AMD’s Radeon RX 580 to see if it is worth buying under the circumstances.

The mining craze has considerably reduced the availability of AMD’s Radeon graphics cards over the past couple of years. Now this boom is over and many miners are trying to sell their hardware on the used market. Many people are cautious of buying video cards that have been deployed in mining operations, because these GPUs have been used under full load for very long periods of time. Right now the used market is awash with these video cards, so the chances that you will get one of them are quite high. But those who are willing to take a chance might get a very nice deal.

With the Radeon RX 580, AMD offers a midrange graphics card with either 4 or 8 GB of VRAM. The 8 GB model should be your first choice, because it will have enough VRAM to allow you to run video games at very high resolutions without stuttering. For the purposes of this review, we got ourselves the Asus ROG Strix RX 580. This graphics card has a very good cooling solution with axial fans. This is why the video card performs very well even under load.

The GPU is based on the Polaris 20 chip, which replaces the Polaris 10 chips of the RX 480/470. This chip is produced using a 14-nm manufacturing process and has approximately 5.7 billion transistors deposited onto a 232 mm² die. The base clock of the Radeon RX 580 amounts to 1257 MHz. The maximum boost clock of the reference model is 1340 MHz. Here, Asus has done some factory overclocking. The ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 runs at 1360 MHz in gaming mode. In OC mode (which can be selected in the Asus GPU Tweak utility), the GPU operates at 1380 MHz. The VRAM is clocked at 2150 MHz (in real terms 8600 MHz), which results in a bandwidth of 275 GB/s.

Our review model differs from the reference-model of the Radeon RX 580 not only visually but also in terms of the PCB design. This is important if you want to use a custom cooling solution such as water-cooling. However, if you intend to use custom cooling, you should first familiarize yourself with the available cooling solutions.

For external devices, the Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 offers one DVI-D port, two HDMI 2.0b outputs and two DisplayPort 1.4 ports. The graphics card requires an 8-pin power connector.

The Test Rig

For this review, we use a Gigabyte X470 AORUS GAMING 7 Wi-Fi motherboard with the Ryzen 7 2700X and 16 GB of G-Skill 3400 MHz RAM. The system is cooled by the Be Quiet Silent Loop (280 mm) liquid cooler. We also use a 4K monitor from Acer, the Predator XB321HK, for this review. A huge thank you goes out to AMD for providing us with this test rig.

Clock Rates

As was previously mentioned, the Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 runs above the reference specifications. The GPU base clock is 1360 MHz and the VRAM is clocked at 8000 MHz. You can choose between three predefined profiles in the Asus GPU Tweak utility (Silent, Gaming and OC). In OC mode, the GPU is clocked 20 MHz higher and therefore reaches 1380 MHz. The utility also allows users to set their own clock rates. The power and temperature limits can also be tweaked via the utility.

Synthetic Benchmarks

The performance of the Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 is comparable to that of an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060. Depending on optimization, one GPU can be ahead of the other. The Radeon RX 580 cannot compete against the much faster GeForce GTX 1070. When compared to the equally fast GTX 1060 from Nvidia, the Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 has an advantage: It has 2 GB more RAM.

Gaming Benchmarks

Unfortunately, synthetic benchmarks rarely reflect the true performance in games. In the gaming benchmarks, the Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 is often beaten by the GeForce GTX 1060. However, this does not mean that the Asus GPU is not fit for gaming. The RX 580 from Asus can run even the latest titles on ultra settings at 1080p.

Certain games such as the latest Assassin’s Creed titles are only playable on high settings. Subjectively speaking, the gaming performance of the Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 is on a very good level. Those who game at 1080p will not be disappointed with the Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580. However, the video card is simply not powerful enough to be able to provide playable frame rates at 4K.

Stress Test, Emissions and Overclocking

The Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 comes with a proprietary cooling solution that has a few big advantages. For one, the GPU operates above the base specifications, plus the noise coming from the three fans cannot be described as annoying. Under load, the graphics card is audible, but it is significantly easier on the ears than a comparable radial cooler, which is found in the reference design.

Under load, the GPU reaches a maximum temperature of 61 °C (with an open case) and therefore achieves a very good frame-rate stability of 98.8% in the Sky Diver stress test. This is why there should not be any drops in performance under sustained load.

The Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 draws 144 watts under load, which is a reasonable value. This is why it is somewhat more energy-efficient than the Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 580.

Those who need more performance can overclock the GPU on their own. We were able to increase the core clock up to 1440 MHz and the memory speed up to 9000 MHz, thereby achieving 2000 more points in 3DMark Fire Strike, as compared to the stock clocks. To achieve this, we had to increase both the power limit and the temperature limit.

Verdict - Good and quiet graphics card

The Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580 is a graphics card for gaming. It is currently available for 300 Euros (~$344). Some used models can be had for about 250 Euros (~$286), which is a very nice deal. This graphics card is primarily for those who game at 1080p. Even though 8 GB of VRAM is enough for 1440p or 4K, the GPU itself is simply not powerful enough to provide playable frame rates in modern games at such resolutions. However, some games are playable at 2160p. This applies, above all, to the latest installment in the FIFA series, for instance.

Those who do not want an Nvidia GPU and are on the lookout for a good graphics card that costs no more than 300 Euros (~$344) will not be disappointed with the Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 580. Besides the good cooling solution, the GPU also features eye-catching RGB effects.

Currently, those who cannot afford a Vega GPU and do not want to miss out on features such as FreeSync do not have a lot of options. Rumor has it that AMD is already working on a successor based on the Polaris architecture. However, right now there is no telling what the availability of the Polaris 30 chips is going to look like after they are launched.

We like the build quality as well as the features such as RGB effects. We are also fond of the Zero Fan mode, which offers silent operation in 2D applications and under light 3D load. The size of the GPU can be a problem, because it requires a very long and wide case. Good air flow is also necessary.
