Asus ROG Ally turns into Nintendo 3DS-like gaming handheld with dual-screen DIY hardware mod
The dual-screen gaming handheld concept isn't new. It was first introduced by Nintendo with its DS console, which later brought out the successor 3DS. However, the company no longer offers support for these classic consoles, and now, more powerful handhelds, such as the Asus ROG Ally (Z1 Extreme variant curr. $599.99 on Best Buy), have taken over the market.
Of course, we do have a much more modern take on the same dual-screen concept, the Ayaneo Flip DS. But YesItsKira, a DIY hardware modder, decided to convert the ROG Ally into a Nintendo 3DS-like gaming handheld instead. While it might seem simple, it's a rather interesting project.
With 3D printed parts, the modded Asus ROG Ally gets two screens that can close up like a clam. The good part is that you too can recreate this DIY project, as YesItsKira has put all the details on a GitHub page. The guide includes detailed steps, part information, and the link to download all the 3D printing files for the mod. Speaking of the required parts, they are all available on Amazon. So you don't need to do much digging.
YesItsKira also mentions that you can fold the second screen back and use the mod as a makeshift stand. That makes the Asus ROG Ally look less like a 3DS and more like a Nintendo Switch.
Another interesting bit is that while the secondary screen requires a USB-C connection, the mod wires it through an integrated USB-C dock. That means you don't need to take the second display off to charge the gaming handheld.
