Apple's wireless AirPods now available for purchase
Apple is no stranger to controversy. The "courageous decision" to remove the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 was met with lots of criticism, and the Macbook Pro's transition to USB-C only has made #DongleLife a running joke. Despite these missteps, Apple looked poised to take change the world of mobile audio with their new AirPods, but the wireless headphones were met with delay after delay. Finally (and just in time for the holidays), the AirPods are available for purchase on Apple’s website.
AirPods are designed to complement the iPhone 7’s audio-jack-free design and operate without wires of any kind. The headphones connect via Bluetooth and are designed for easy setup. According to Apple,
“with AirPods, setting up and using wireless headphones has never been easier. Just open the charging case near your iPhone and with a simple tap, AirPods are immediately set up with all the devices signed into your iCloud account, including your Apple Watch, iPad and Mac. Advanced sensors detect when AirPods are in your ear and can automatically play and pause your music. Double tapping on AirPods activates Siri, allowing you to access your favorite personal assistant to select and control your music, get directions, make and receive calls or perform any other Siri task.”
Apple promises that each AirPod can last for up to 5 hours of active listening time and can be charged inductively in the included charging case, which can hold enough juice to recharge the AirPods about 5 times.
AirPods are available on Apple’s site for $159 US and should ship before Christmas, although expected shipping time has already been pushed back several times this morning. Apple has stated that physical Apple Stores and authorized resellers should have stock ready to sell by next week.
