Apple making the upgrade to OLED for its MacBook Pro lineup has been rumoured several times in the past by several prominent analysts. According to a recent report from TrendForce, it seems Apple is already making strides toward this goal by urging its suppliers to level up their investments in OLED panels large enough for laptops. As already indicated by previous reports, Apple is expected to make this transition by 2026 at the earliest.
Needless to say, OLED displays boast multiple improvements over traditional LED displays. Thanks to per-pixel dimming, OLED panels rock impressive black levels allowing for a near-infinite contrast ratio and an excellent HDR experience. They also boast the benefit of instantaneous response times, making them particularly attractive to gamers.
However, there are certain drawbacks to OLED panels as well. The persistent risk of permanent burn-in may concern professionals who work with static screen elements for extended periods. OLEDs typically also have lower brightness levels when compared to Apple's current-generation Mini LED panels, although the company's tandem OLED technology appears sufficiently potent to have that particular concern sorted.
