Dell only announced its first laptop with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chip, namely the XPS 13 (9345), on Monday. The company has now confirmed that the device will be the first laptop in the world to be delivered with a tandem OLED display like in the new Apple iPad Pro.

Tandem OLED panels promise higher peak brightness, lower power consumption and a longer lifespan, but until now these panels were only available in the Honor Magic6 RSR Porsche Design flagship smartphone and the new Apple iPad Pro. Dell has now confirmed to "The Verge" editor Tom Warren that the brand new XPS 13 (9345) will be the first notebook in the world to be delivered with a tandem OLED display.

The fact that Dell omitted this information both in the technical data and in the Reviewer Guide is probably due to the fact that this new panel from LG Display does not come close to the impressive brightness of the panel in the iPad Pro - Apple's tablet achieves 1,600 nits when displaying HDR content and 1,000 nits across the entire surface, while Dell only advertises a peak brightness of 500 nits and an SDR brightness of 400 nits, just like the direct predecessor model.

The diagonal of 13.4 inches and the resolution of 2880 x 1800 are also identical to the OLED panel of the XPS 13 (9340), meaning that the advantages of the new display technology for users are likely to be limited to power consumption and the potentially longer lifespan. The fact that LG Display is already mass-producing tandem OLED panels in laptop format suggests that more laptops with comparable displays will soon be launched onto the market.

The new Dell XPS 13 (9345) also boasts the brand-new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, a 1.17-kg, 14.8-mm-thin chassis and a 55 Wh battery, which, thanks to the more economical ARM chip and the new OLED display, is likely to ensure runtimes of up to 16 hours when streaming video, with the model with 1200p LCD lasting significantly longer with up to 27 hours of streaming runtime.
