Apple pledges US$1.1 billion to European Silicon Design Center expansion
Apple claims to have developed "deep roots" the city of Munich, Germany over more than 40 years (or since 1981), with the most recent major milestone in this relationship being a €1 billion (~US$1.06 billion) investment in the OEM's European Silicon Design Center in 2021. Now, the Cupertino behemoth plans to dip into its massive capital reserves to the same extent in order to extend the facility over more buildings.
They are to be found in a new facility on the street Seidlstrasse, as well as "additional R&D spaces" on Marsstrasse and Denisstrasse, located across the road from an existing Apple site (on Karlstrasse) which, together with some others in the vicinity, comprise the current European Silicon Design Center. They are all found not far away from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), recognized by Apple as "one of Europe’s leading engineering schools and research institutes".
The Center is already credited with contributions to the successful development of the M2 Pro and Max, "as well as critical cellular and power management innovations". Now, with the expansion, the ~2,000 engineers that have found a workspace there are backed to become further involved in making more of the same in the future. Apple has yet to specify when work on the new facility at Seidlstrasse will be completed.
