Apple had reportedly planned to release iPhone 16- or 17-series devices with their own in-house Wi-Fi chips to go with their next-gen proprietary processors. However, according to a leading industry analyst, these aspirations have just gone the same way as the Cupertino giant's custom 5G baseband dreams. Meanwhile, the unusually high pressure to make A16 Bionic and M2-series successors instead mounts.

According to industry sources, Apple has been on a mission to make as much of the silicon found in its devices - particularly its iPhones - as in-house as possible. This apparent new practice (possibly based on how well the M series for Mac has worked out thus far) may be intended to bring as much confluence to the OEM's hardware as it would bring disruption to businesses such as Qualcomm.

However, it seems these mobile chipset firms can once again rest easy, as Apple has reportedly now given up on its plans for proprietary Wi-Fi solutions as it has for its own 5G modems.

The respected securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo notes that the OEM had planned to introduce them as next-gen iPhones upgrade to Wi-Fi 6E or 7; however, their manufacture is now starved of "resources" thanks to the higher priority of new flagship processors based on advanced 3 nanometer (nm) processes, and all the problems that has entailed so far.

Furthermore, it seems getting Bluetooth onto the same first-party chip - a necessity for iPhone purposes - was too much of a stretch even for a company like the Cupertino-based behemoth.

Then again, the supplier Broadcom may be relieved, as the 16 series is now slated to ship with its wireless chips as usual.
