Mini-LED displays are slowly trickling throughout Apple’s device lineup, and a new rumor from a top Apple analyst claims the technology will make its way into Apple’s mainstream MacBook.
Ming-Chi Kuo, the oft-cited Apple analyst, claimed in a recent investor note that Apple will introduce a MacBook Air with a 13.3-inch Mini-LED display sometime in the middle of 2022. Kuo also said that the new MacBook Air would feature the next iteration of Apple’s custom silicon, the M2 chip.
Kuo stated both of these features would be coming to the MacBook Air line earlier this year, but his recent note pegs the date sometime between April and June, possibly at WWDC 2022.
Apple introduced Mini-LED to the iPad Pro 12.9 earlier this year, and rumors are swirling that Mini-LED displays will appear in the MacBook Pro line, specifically in 14- and 16-inch screens. Additionally, many tipsters speculate that the upcoming iPad Mini 6 will also feature a Mini-LED display.
A Mini-LED screen may indeed be on the table for the MacBook Air. This possibility complements other rumors of a design overhaul for the venerable Apple laptop. Mini-LED displays seem to thread the needle between cheaper but lower quality LCD screens and high-end but expensive OLED panels.
As with all rumors, take this one with a grain of salt. It’s likely Apple will update the MacBook Air next year, but we will have to wait and see what kind of screen tech it will have.
