It has been claimed that although the upcoming Apple MacBook Pro 14 will obviously be smaller than the MacBook Pro 16 it will still offer the same level of performance as the larger laptop thanks to the Apple M1X SoC. However, this performance comes at a price, with the M1X MacBook Pro 14 likely costing much more than a MacBook Pro 13.

The tipster @dylandkt has offered up some juicy morsels of information about the 2021 Apple MacBook Pro laptops. The analyst recently commented that both the MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16, which are “coming this fall”, will offer the same level of performance thanks to the presence of the same processor – the Apple M1X. The leaker praises the apparent fact that being in a smaller form doesn’t mean the M1X MacBook Pro 14 will suffer in regard to performance levels. However, this unsurprisingly will come at a cost.

The telling words at the end of the relevant tweet are “expect a notable increase in price for the 14 inch over the 13 inch”. Special attention should be paid to the word “notable” here, as this implies it will be a considerable amount more that future M1X MacBook Pro 14 buyers will have to shell out. The current 13-inch MacBook Pro with Apple M1 chip costs from US$1,299, and considering the redesign the 2021 MacBook Pro is likely getting, it’s understandable there will be a significant price hike included.

For instance, mini-LED panels should be onboard and then there’s that Apple M1X chip. The MacBook Pro 13 has an M1 SoC with an 8-core CPU part and 8-core GPU part; the M1X coming with the MacBook Pro 14 is rumored to have a 10-core CPU part and a 16-core GPU part, while Apple Silicon with a 32-core GPU is allegedly reserved solely for the MacBook Pro 16. Huge performance boosts can be expected from the new chip in comparison to the M1, so a “notable” price difference shouldn’t be a surprise.

Of course, there has been some speculation as to what price point the 2021 MacBook Pro 14 might start at, with some of @dylandkt’s followers suggesting a price tag of US$1,799 (and even up to US$1,999). The current Intel variant of the MacBook Pro 13 starts from US$1,799; Apple might keep the M1 MacBook Pro 13 as an entry-level option for those wanting an Apple Silicon-based laptop and then slot the M1X MacBook Pro 14 into the position currently occupied by the more-expensive Intel MBP.
