Leaks about Apple's upcoming iPhone 15 series have been doing the rounds on the interwebs. While we are still a long way away from the iPhone 15 lineup's launch later this year, it is now becoming clearer that Apple will finally make the transition from Lightning to USB-C. Now, images touted to be of the real phone are making their rounds.
Base iPhone 15 in flesh
The first leak is what appears to be the base 6.1-inch iPhone 15 in flesh leaked by MacRumors via @URedditor on Twitter. The design is from an early model, which Apple internally refers to as D37. Being an entry-level model, the design is similar to that of the iPhone 14. We also see the presence of the Dynamic Island including the TrueDepth camera. The Dynamic Island is expected to come to all iPhone 15 models.
The leaker also showed off the USB Type-C port, which will be a necessity to comply with EU norms. The images are deliberately published in low quality to protect the source. While things can change at the time of launch, this design more or less looks like the real deal.
iPhone 15 Plus renders and a new dark red iPhone 15 Pro
Apart from the base iPhone 15, we also now have renders of the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus and the iPhone 15 Pro. These renders are based on CAD drawings that were provided to Apple's supply chain. We have detailed the iPhone 15 Pro renders before, but now we get to see a new dark red color option.
The iPhone 15 Plus's design will be similar to that of the base iPhone 15 including the presence of a Dynamic Island and the USB Type-C port. Renders sourced by 9to5Mac show thinner bezels and slight changes to the device's thickness (7.81 mm for the iPhone 15 Plus vs. 7.79 mm for the iPhone 14 Plus).
Apple is known to offer special edition colors with the Pro models each year — the iPhone 14 Pro is available in Space Black and Deep Purple options. It looks like dark red will be the special color for the iPhone 15 Pro this year.
Apple is expected to make the iPhone 15 Pro in titanium, similar to the Apple Watch. New processes will have to be devised for properly coating the titanium while considering extraneous factors such as production costs, yields, etc. It will be interesting to see the color choices Apple will be offering this year with the Pro models.
Apple is also known to scrap fully complete designs entirely. For instance, the gold iPhone X didn't make it to market, but FCC leaks showed off the phone in its entirety.
It is still early days, but the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus can be expected to feature the A16 Bionic and a Qualcomm X70 5G modem while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are slated to feature the upcoming A17 Bionic, titanium chassis, curved design, and obligatory camera improvements.
