Apple iPad 10 teardown video explains no Apple Pencil 2 support and reveals differences with iPad Air 5
Apple came in for plenty of criticism with the iPad 10, such as its decision to only include original Apple Pencil support. Creating the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter to account for no native support but failing to produce enough of them at launch did not help matters either, nor did Apple's decision to make the iPad 10 incompatible with iPad Air 5 and iPad Pro 11 accessories. While the latter appears to be a business decision, iFixit has sought to explain why the Apple Pencil 2 is incompatible with the iPad 10's design.
As the website describes in the embedded video below, the new landscape-orientated front-facing camera occupies the same space where the Apple Pencil 2 charging coil exists in the iPad Air 5 and iPad Pro 11. Moving the charging coil to the opposite side would clash with a keyboard cover, and there does not appear to be enough space on the iPad's shorter sides either. Additionally, magnets used for compatibility with first and third-party cases seemingly prevented Apple from placing the charging coil on either side of the landscape camera too.
Elsewhere, Apple has decided to fix the USB Type-C ribbon cable to the logic board, a decision that iFixit branded a 'huge design fail' because it is a high mechanical wear part. The website notes that Apple has glued the battery and display too, although neither are that hard to remove. With all that in mind, the iPad 10 still scored well in our review, achieving an 89% overall score. Please see our review for our full thoughts on the tablet and how it fares in benchmarks.
