Apple has overhauled the entry-level iPad, one of three tablets that the company has introduced today. Not only has Apple given its budget iPad a new design, but it has also upgraded the tablet to USB Type-C and the A14 Bionic. The new iPad launches alongside a curious Apple Pencil accessory, too.

Apple has released the 10th generation iPad, sold simply as iPad. As the company's marketing images show, the new iPad is closer in design to the current iPad Air than its predecessor. Unfortunately, the revised design coincides with a price increase, although Apple has included numerous other upgrades to justify the uplift. For reference, the entry-level iPad now starts at US$449; the older remains on Apple's website from US$329, though.

On the one hand, Apple has equipped the latest iPad with a 10.9-inch display, which outputs at 2,360 x 1,640 pixels with a 60 Hz refresh rate and at up to 500 nits. It is worth noting that Apple has not laminated the display on the iPad, nor has it provided an anti-reflective coating. On the other hand, Apple's proprietary Lightning connector has made way for USB Type-C. According to Apple, the new port allows the iPad to connect to 4K monitors, albeit without specifying the port's speed.

Additionally, the iPad relies on the A14 Bionic, a chipset that Apple introduced with the iPhone 12 series. Moreover, the updated design leaves no room for a home button. Instead, Apple has integrated a Touch ID sensor within the device's lock button. Furthermore, Apple has equipped the iPad with a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle front-facing camera that supports Center Stage. Surprisingly, the camera sits on the tablet's longer side, implying that Apple intends people to use the tablet in landscape mode when making video calls.

Odder still is the tablet's Apple Pencil compatibility. For some reason, the iPad remains stuck on the first-generation Apple Pencil. However, the iPad cannot recharge the stylus natively because of the switch to USB Type-C connectivity. As a result, Apple has released a new dongle for charging the Apple Pencil, which retails for US$9. Incidentally, it has also introduced a new Magic Keyboard Folio for US$249 with a kickstand and a detachable design. The new iPad is already orderable and will start shipping on October 26.
