Apple has now revealed which devices are eligible for iPadOS 17, iOS 17, watchOS 10 and macOS Sonoma, OS upgrades that it announced as part of yesterday's WWDC 2023 keynote. Unfortunately, Apple has dropped some devices that it currently supports.

Apple has now published previews for its latest OS updates, all announced during yesterday's lengthy WWDC 2023 keynote. To recap, Apple presented iPadOS 17, iOS 17, watchOS 10 and macOS 14 Sonoma, which should reach stable status towards the end of the year. As always, Apple has dropped support for older devices, despite continuing to currently furnish them with software updates. For example, the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X will remain on iOS 16, having debuted in 2017 with iOS 11. For reference, the following devices will receive iOS 17, other than the forthcoming iPhone 15 series:

  • iPhone 14 / iPhone 14 Plus / iPhone 14 Pro / iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 / iPhone 13 mini / iPhone 13 Pro / iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 / iPhone 12 mini / iPhone 12 Pro / iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11 / iPhone 11 Pro / iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS / iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer)

Meanwhile, the fifth-generation iPad and first-generation iPad Pro will no longer receive major software updates. In short, iPadOS 17 features the same changes as iOS 17, as well as other updates like improved lock screen customisation. According to Apple, second-generation iPad Pro models are eligible for iPadOS 17, plus the iPad 6iPad mini 5 and iPad Air 3 or newer.

Conversely, watchOS 10 will be available to every Apple Watch that can run watchOS 9. In other words, watchOS 10 will reach all Apple Watch models from the Series 4 onwards. However, Apple will restrict some features to newer devices; the company has not provided full details about this yet, though. By contrast, Apple will not officially support most Macs that it released in 2017. Specifically, while the 2017 iMac Pro remains, the 12-inch MacBook, MacBook Pro and the iMac will not join other Macs on macOS 14 Sonoma. As such, the OS update will eventually land on the following devices:

  • iMac (2019 and newer)
  • iMac Pro (2017 and newer)
  • MacBook Air (2018 and newer)
  • Mac mini (2018 and newer)
  • MacBook Pro (2018 and newer)
  • Mac Pro (2019 and newer)
  • Mac Studio (all models)
