The Apple MacBook Neo ($689 on Amazon) offers attractive value for money, but makes many compromises in return. In our in-depth review we criticized, among other things, the lack of a backlit keyboard, the limited port selection, the slow charging speed and the soldered RAM limited to 8 GB, but the webcam quality also failed to impress.
The camera experts at DxOMark have now analyzed the webcam in detail. With 98 points, the budget MacBook's camera ranks in the middle of the leaderboard, but falls a full twelve points behind the current 14-inch MacBook Pro. At least the MacBook Neo manages to outperform the Dell XPS 14 by 26 points.
The Apple MacBook Neo's webcam records videos at 1080p resolution, but Apple provides no further details about the built-in sensor or lens. According to DxOMark, the camera stands out for its natural rendering of skin tones, even in low light. Combined with a decent dynamic range thanks to HDR image processing, barely visible image noise and mostly accurate exposure, this gives the notebook passable image quality for video chats.
However, the webcam struggles with a lack of image detail – even in good lighting, faces are captured at low resolution, and details in bright areas are quickly lost. Colors are not always rendered evenly in videos either, which can lead to an inconsistent look. So while the webcam delivers acceptable results, there is clear room for improvement in the next-generation MacBook Neo.
