Aorus X7
Looking for a mobile gaming rig is getting easier these days. The Aorus X7 weighs only at 6.6lbs (3kg), which is much lighter than the traditional 17-inch gaming laptops. But don't let the weight fool you, it's a powerhouse of a machine.
Sporting a 4th generation i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM and a pair of GTX 860M SLI graphics card; there won’t be any trouble running the most demanding games out in the market right now. All this in a frame that is less than an inch thick. You can choose to run single or dual graphics card depending on what you're doing. Single of course will save battery life and have a quieter fan running.
The screen is a fairly standard one, although it's FullHD, it doesn't actually increase the gaming experience and holds it back in terms of visual with all that power. It offers SSD and HDD storage, which lets Windows boot up fairly quick but slows down a little when it needs to fetch files from the HDD.
To top it all off, it comes with two speakers and two woofers. As you might expect, the battery life performance was poor. You can run roughly around two hours solely on battery power. Overall, it houses great hardware in a slim and light chassis.

Grab bag. A thin 17-inch chassis with a dual GPU solution: This is how the Taiwanese manufacturer imagines the perfect gaming notebook. We have a closer look at the exciting concept. Does the unusual hardware combination reveal any drawbacks?

All in all, the Aorus X7 is an impressive piece of engineering even if you discount the SLI graphics (and the forthcoming upgrade from two GTX 765M to two GTX 860M chips that Aorus announced at Computex as this review was being written). There're the dual solid-state drives plus the hard drive. There's the maximum 32GB of memory and 802.11ac wireless.

First things first: the Aorus X7 Gaming laptop is simply stunning to look at. The Aorus X7 SLI is purpose-built for gaming, with more power and much less compromise than the competition. It has a chassis that's one of the slimmest in its class, yet manages to pack a heat dissipation system to support its high-end gaming hardware. It's a sure winner for gamers on the go.

Aorus X7 v2
The Aorus X7 is unique as a high-end gamer laptop with two Nvidia Geforce GTX 860M in SLI with 8 GB GDDR5 video memory. In addition, it comes with a Core i7-4710HQ and DDR3-1866 RAM (up to 32 GB). It is a large laptop, with a 17.3 inch LED display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. However, this large screen display does not correlate to color sharpness. The screen quality is disappointing with low contrast ratio and dim color temperature.
Two GPUs in a slim notebook means that even simple tasks like surfing will be accompanied by audible fan noise. The sound gets even louder during gaming, which this laptop is made for. In addition, the case is warm to the touch even while idle.
The Aorus X7 houses two sub-woofers and two tweeters. So, basses are good and it is certainly enjoyable to listen to gaming music. Battery life suffers from the powerful hardware. It only lasts a mere 2.5 hours without internet, and 1.5 hours with WiFi.
If high temperature, loud noise, short battery life, and mediocre display can be ignored, the Aorus X7 is actually fairly attractive in terms of aesthetics and hardware. It houses three mSATA-SSDs in RAID-0 (very powerful drives). The Gigabyte Aorus X7 is an impressive performer at only 2.3 cm thick and 3.24 kg.

Two are better than one. Although it has not been long since it appeared on the market, the successor is already available: Not even five months after our test, Aorus launched the next model of its slim high-end gamer, the X7. Instead of a pair of GTX 765M in SLI, now two GTX 860M graphics chips deliver a lot of gaming performance.

The Aorus X7 isn’t perfect (we don’t like the noise or heat) and the second GPU may be wasted on some games, but it’s still one of the most desirable gaming laptops we’ve seen. If you’re not bothered about having a slim, attractive laptop and want to spend less, however, consider buying the Scan 3XS Graphite LG156. It also has great graphics performance and is powerful enough to use in place of a desktop computer.

While the Aorus X7 doesn't pave new ground in the field of portable gaming laptops, it isn't overshadowed by the competition, either. For $2,299, the X7 offers a Core i7 processor, dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPUs, three SSDs in RAID 0 configuration, a gorgeous 1080p display and stellar audio. The fact that Aorus managed to cram these components into a chassis that measures less than an inch thick is nothing short of an engineering marvel.

Gigabyte deserves praise for making a laptop that’s consistently quick in a chassis that’s much slimmer and lighter than rivals, but the Aorus struggles to cope in some departments. It’s loud and hot, has poor battery life, and its keyboard and screen aren’t as good as others. At this price, the Alienware 17 is a better option, and the MSI GT70 is better if you want to spend a little less cash.

When you need speed, the Aorus X7 v2 can deliver. It has dual GPUs, triple SSDs, a quad-core CPU, and it flies. It's super-slim considering all this good stuff is inside, but it is a wide unit that can be cumbersome to transport. Aorus X7 Pro
The Aorus X7 Pro is Gigabyte's thinnest gaming laptop. The 17.3 inch device with a height of 0.9 inch (2.29 cm) and a weight of only 6.6 pounds (2.99 kg) houses incredibly high-end specifications. It runs on an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor with a Turbo clock of up to 3.7 GHz and 8 GB DDR3L RAM. Additionally, it uses an NVIDIA GTX 970M with 6 GB GDDR5 VRAM and an integrated Intel Iris Pro Graphics for graphics. The X7 Pro has a matte 17 inch display with a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and a built-in 512 GB SATA SSD, which is more than enough to store most of the current games available in the market. The X7 Pro features three USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI port, a mini-Displayport, an SD card reader, and a standard 3.5 mm microphone and headphone jack (separate). For connectivity, it comes with a standard 11ac WiFi card with a Bluetooth 4.0. Finally, the gaming laptop sports a 1 MP HD front camera and a keyboard with numpad with color customizable backlight. In addition, it features a 3-cell battery, which delivers a rather short battery life of up to 3 hours of continuous usage.Specifications

Performance at all costs. Aorus is one of the first manufacturers to fuse two GeForce GTX 970M cards to an SLI array. Both the performance and the waste heat are correspondingly high. Can the slim 17-inch chassis deal with this load?

The Aorus X7 Pro easily stands out of the crowd of oversized gaming laptops as a much thinner and lighter machine. These rigs are often called desktop replacements not only for their size but also the amount of performance they can deliver. Recently, though, laptops have been getting thinner from Ultrabooks to workstations to gaming laptops - now, a 17.3-inch laptop has joined the trend.

The Aorus X7 Pro is a stellar performer on the benchmark tests, there is no doubt of that. However, quality issues with its ergonomics, audio, and video keep it from a much higher score. Given that you're paying close to $2,600 for this laptop, you expect a great screen, keyboard, and touchpad to go along with the performance, and these are sorely lacking. The fan noise is inexcusable as well, kicking up to uncomfortable levels even in normal use and practically unbearable when gaming.

For the most part, the X7 Pro succeeds but stumbles hard while doing so. Thanks to the Nvidia dual 970M setup, this machine easily outpaces Alienware 18 I reviewed last July, a massive gaming laptop that costs nearly double the amount and is also twice as thick compared to Aorus' thin mobile gaming offering. Even the similarly priced MSI GT72 Dominator falls well short of the X7 Pro even with a Nvidia 980, the best mobile GPU on the market currently.

The Aorus X7 Pro offers top of the line performance in an unbelievably thin form factor. The slim design looks fantastic and moving to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M is a huge performance boost. But attempting to have the best of both worlds comes at a cost. The chassis is nowhere near as durable as its thicker counterparts. The thin design is also likely contributing to thermal issues as the constant hum of the fan can be loud enough to disrupt the user and break the feeling of immersion when playing games. The device is often hot enough to the point where it can’t be used as a “laptop.”

The Aorus X7 v3 doesn’t quite live up to the portability it promises when it comes to battery life, but it does still pack a huge amount of performance into a decidedly slim chassis, particularly where 3D graphics are concerned. The screen is an improvement on the first model, too, and there’s a reasonable quantity of super-fast storage. Even the sub-£2,000 price isn’t outrageous, considering the specification. If you’re after a fast, stylish entertainment notebook, the Aorus X7 v3 is an enticing bit of kit.

Aorus X7 Pro-Sync looks great and delivers fine gaming performance however the cooling in this slender laptop is marginal at best. The result is that the cooling fans are horribly noisy. It doesn’t help that battery life is unimpressive but we can forgive that in a gaming laptop. The issue here is that Aorus has put the emphasis on making the X7 Pro-Sync very thin and this has impacted on the usability and performance. When you consider the high price of this laptop it is quite a problem. It is a crying shame that Aorus could have made the laptop a few millimeters thicker and the result would probably have turned out better for the paying customer.

There’s no denying Aorus’ latest gaming laptop is fast, but the fan noise really is a major issue. We can’t imagine gaming with such loud fans, hour after hour, is going to be a whole lot of fun, though a pair of active noise-cancelling headphones would go a long way to solving his issue. Perhaps Aorus should consider including a set in the box…

The Aorus X7 Pro Sync is arguably suffering from a mild case of form over function. Its slim dimensions and reasonable weight given the extreme hardware inside means that it's actually a fairly portable unit. However, the slim chassis also inevitably gives way to excessive noise levels as the smaller fans need to ramp up to deal with the heat.

Aorus X7 Pro v5
The super thin and lightweight Aorus X7 Pro V5 is considered the world's most powerful 17.3 inch laptop made for multi-purpose use and gaming. It is designed with an elegant frame and with an excellent aluminium chassis of less than 2.29 cm (0.9 inch). It is 58% slimmer and 26% lighter than similar laptops from other brands. It comes with Windows 10 or Windows 10 Pro Edition, a 6th generation 2.7 GHz to 3.6 GHz Intel Core i7-6820HK processor, dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M graphic cards, and two 256 GB Solid State Drives. Its 17.3" Full HD IPS screen is punchy, sharp and vibrant with good viewing angles and appropriate brightness, which makes outdoor use possible. It has 8 GB or 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and the keyboard is comfortable to use for long periods. The good thing about the keyboard is that it features a white backlight. The Aorus X7 Pro V5 does not have a DVD burner, but it comes with a SD card reader and the ports included are USB 3.1 Type-C, USB 3.0, a Mini-Display port, an HDMI 2.0 port, a VGA port and a LAN port along with a microphone jack, a headphone jack and a HD webcam. The laptop weights only 3.2 kg, which is very light for a 17.3 inch gaming laptop and its battery life is up to 3.7 hours as measured by PCMark 8 Conventional Battery Test.Specifications

With its super fast performance, excellent speakers and great keyboard, the Aorus X7 Pro v5 really does represent the very best in gaming laptops. Of course, there’s no getting away from the X7 Pro v5’s extortionately high price of £2,100, but when you put it side by side with the equally expensive Asus ROG G752VY, it’s immediately clear which laptop is better value for money.

With an above average screen, great performance and an excellent chassis, the X7 Pro V5 is a superb 17in laptop. It's not worth an upgrade over the older model, but for a desktop replacement and general gaming/multi-purpose machine it ticks all the boxes. Performance was a tad slow in some of our stock speed results, which can only put down to the way the CPU turbo is handled as temperatures were kept fairly cool at stock speeds.

Aorus X7 v6
The Aorus X7 v6 is a high-performance gaming laptop targeted to gamers who game on the go. The Aorus X7 is a series of gaming laptops by Gigabyte, which has grown the brand into a symbol for powerful gaming PCs. The v6 of the series is released just 7 months after its v5 predecessor. Instead of following the predecessor which uses two graphics cards in SLI, the X7 v6 relies on a single high-end GPU. This counters the weakness of two SLI graphic cards such as driver dependency and enormous power consumption. The laptop looks mostly sleek with a matte surface touchpad that has a blue Aorus logo on it and three mesh grilles below the hinges of the laptop to provide better air circulation. The matte touchpad is more precise and allows the user to slide their fingers easier compared to a glossy touchpad. Besides that, the chassis of the laptop is built from strong metal and feels quite solid for a slim gaming laptop. The laptop measures at 25 x 428 x 305 mm (0.98 x 16.85 x 12.01 in) and weighs at 3.23 kg (113.94 oz / 7.12 pounds).
Unlike the v5, the macro keys have been integrated into the main keyboard, which looks better and is easier to access. Besides that, the keyboard is an RGB Fusion keyboard with number pad featuring per key RGB backlighting in 16.8 million color variations. This is certainly a neat feature for gamers. Running on the more capable Intel Core i7-6820HK processor clocked at 2.7~3.6 GHz and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 with 8 GB of dedicated RAM, it is certainly among the higher-end gaming laptops. As for the display, while most notebooks use IPS panels, the X7 v6 is only available with a anti-glare 17.3-inch TN panel with a QHD resolution and an aspect ratio of 16:9. It doesn't have the typical characteristics of an IPS display such as high contrast and rich colors. However, it has a good response time which is essential for gaming. Typical IPS panels require 20-30 ms to switch from black to white but the Aorus TN panel only requires 10 ms to do so.
The laptop has wireless modules made by Qualcomm Atheros built in with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 support. For audio, it has two 2W speakers and two woofers with AORUS Acoustic+ technology to deliver realistic and high-quality audio experience. A 2 MP webcam is also built in for convenience in video calling. Connection ports are also widely available with USB 3.0 and Type-C ports available. The Aorus x7 v6 is a very good choice for gamers who are looking for the ultimate gaming machine. However, it has several issues such as its less than perfect display and its high retail price.

More impressive still is its respectable, if somewhat loud, cooling system, which was more than up to the task of handling its factory-overclocked processor and graphics card. Thin gaming notebooks generally have cooling or fan noise issues, but the Aorus X7 v6 was a pleasant exception in our tests. We’re also huge fans of its per-key RGB LED backlit keyboard, which looks great and offers endless customization and fun.

Aorus X7 DT v6
The Aorus X7 DT V6 is an hardcore gaming rig which outclassed its contemporaries. At first glance, it retains a sleek magnesium exterior with its silver logo emblazoned in front. Compared to other gaming laptops which are prominently angular with sharp edges, the X7 DT retains a smooth, polished finish. Its dimensions measure at 42.8 x 30.51 x 2.29 cm (16.85 x 12.01 x 0.90 inch) and it weighs 3.2 kg (7.06 pounds) with battery. It is fitted with a full sized backlit keyboard. One interesting feature of the keyboard is its spectrum of multicolour backlighting that can be programmed to respond to in-game prompts. Users can even set up animated illumination effects like breathing, waves, and ripples. Its touchpad is wide and responsive. It boasts a 17.3" (16:9) 120 Hz wide viewing angle, anti-glare matte-type LCD screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and G-Sync technology displays incredibly sharp and clear visuals, a condition which is indispensable for gamers. Visuals rendered are sharp and crisp with remarkable clarity. Aorus has indeed not compromised on the X7 DT’s specs. It is powered by the 6th Generation Intel Mobile Core i7-6820HQ Skylake processor with Intel HM170 Express chipset. This powerful CPU is coupled with the mind-blowing NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (Pascal) and 8 GB of GDDR5X VRAM. Gamers are able to accelerate the CPU performance from 3.6 GHz to 4.0 GHz with just one click. It also runs on 32 GB RAM and features a 512 GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (upgradeable to 1TB 7200RPM hard drive). Running VR games on such specs is a given. The Killer DoubleShot Pro technology on the Wi-Fi antenna maximizes bandwidth to provide optimal online gaming speeds. Cooling this gaming powerhouse is no small feat as it is fitted with 6 heat pipes, 4 exhaust vents, 2 fans, along with Aorus' exclusive custom fan control, all of which contributes to its large footprint. To facilitate a full streaming solution, the TriDef SmartCam software is able to remove backgrounds without the hassle of using a green screen. The XSplit Gamecaster and Broadcaster maximize social media integration for real-time chats. The X7 DT is also equipped for blazing fast connectivity as it comes with 3 USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 3.1 (Type-C) port, 1 HDMI port, 1 RJ45 port and 1 Mini-Display port as well as an SD card slot. It comes with a sizeable 94.24 Wh lithium-ion polymer battery, which provides gamers with the much-needed juice for extensive gaming. While many might still question the existence of gaming laptops, for those who are interested, the choices will keep coming. Overall, this gaming rig is built to wipe out all its rivals and even its extortionate price will not leave this gaming machine any less desirable. Boundless performance. Gigabyte has taken the design of their AORUS gaming notebook to the next level with the advent of the X7 DT v6. With class-leading GPU and CPU performance, speedy solid-state storage, and powerful networking and display options, can anything slow it down?

The AORUS X7 DT v6 sports a really distinctive, elegant design which exudes a premium feel. In particular, the neutral charcoal finish is splendid and combines rather nicely with the silver AORUS logo. The product’s remarkably slim frame is surprising when you consider the mammoth horsepower at your disposal. While the laptop isn’t the most portable option available today, it’s lighter than competing models opting for a similar form factor. For example, the MSI GT73VR weighs 3.9Kg while the AORUS X7 DT v6 is 3.2KG. Judging a product’s visual appeal is difficult because it depends on subjective taste. Saying that, I personally believe that the AORUS X7 DT v6 is one of the most attractive laptops ever devised.

Aorus:
This company was founded as a subsidiary of Gigabyte in Tawain in 2014. The logo is a falcon head, since the name Aorus is derived from the ancient Egyptian falcon god Horus. According to employees, the first letter of HORUS was changed to "A" to represent the brand as "A team". Aorus primarily produces gaming laptops as well as computer accessories.
Since the market shares are still low, there are also few reviews. However, the products achieve relatively good ratings (as of 2016).
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M SLI: Two GeForce GTX 765M graphics cards in SLI combination.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M SLI: Two GeForce GTX 860M graphics cards in SLI combination.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M SLI: Two GeForce GTX 970M graphics cards in SLI combination.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile: Pascal based high-end mobile graphics card based on a cut down GP104 (like the GTX 1080) and GDDR5 graphics memory. Successor to the GTX 980M with a 10 Watts higher TDP. Similar to the desktop GTX 1070 performance wise, but with more shaders and lower clock speeds.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Mobile: Pascal based laptop graphics card using GDDR5 graphics memory. Should offer a similar performance to the deskto GTX 1080. However, there is also a more power efficient "Max-Q" version that performs worse than the normal GTX1080 and is used in thin and light laptops.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

6820HK: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Kaby Lake:
i7-7820HK: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture running at 2.9 - 3.9 GHz. It is the second fastest model of the consumer H-series in the beginning of 2017. The chip also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU clocked at 350 - 1100 MHz and is manufactured in a 14 nm process (improved compared to Skylake). Compared to the Core i7-7820HQ, the 7820HK lacks business features like vPro or TXT support.
Intel Coffee Lake:
i7-8850H: On Coffee Lake architecture based processor for big and heavy laptops. Integrates six processor cores clocked at 2.6 - 4.3 GHz (4.1 GHz with 4 cores, 4 GHz with 6 cores) that support HyperThreading. Manufactured in an improved 14nm process (14nm++).
