A lot of smartphone makers have multiple sub-brands to address different market tiers and regions. These sub-brands don’t always survive in the long run, and that’s what happened with OnePlus, but it now looks like there may be another sub-brand on the chopping block.

It’s not uncommon for parent companies to absorb subsidiaries based on their performance. This is exactly what happened with OnePlus, Realme and their parent company Oppo. Now, it looks like another sub-brand may be due for a similar treatment.

Known leaker Yogesh Brar has shared on X that, just like the Oppo consolidation, another brand may get absorbed by the parent company soon. While the leaker doesn’t specify which brand, they claim that it is due to their underwhelming performance. There is also no timeline for when this may happen. Users have chimed in with their thoughts and guesses of who it might be.

The top contenders are Poco and Redmi, and iQoo. The first two are sub-brands of Xiaomi, while the latter is a subsidiary of Vivo. Neither of these brands has a strong presence in the US, with dwindling sales in the European market. But they are somewhat competitive in India and China, so the decision by the respective parent company is likely based on their performance in those markets.

A few also believe CMF could be absorbed into its parent company, Nothing.

Strongest contenders

Most likely, it will either be Poco or iQoo that gets absorbed by their parent company. In a recent update to HyperOS 3.1, some Poco phones got rid of their unique app icons and replaced them with Xiaomi icons, as pointed out by a commenter. Poco’s smartphone release strategy is also similar to how OnePlus and Oppo carry out their releases. On the other hand, iQoo has also not performed very well in India and already has the same software – Funtouch OS (at least outside of China) – as Vivo phones.

As with OnePlus and Oppo, the restructuring has led to a shift in launch strategy for the Indian market. The company will now focus more on mid-range to budget offerings rather than flagships. The newly announced OnePlus N series is a prime example of that.

What do you think? Is it going to be Poco, Redmi, iQoo, or a different brand that merges with their parent company? Let us know in the comments below.
