Some Galaxy S24 phones might have a grainy texture that is primarily visible against dark backgrounds per various reports that have been circulating on forums. The grainy texture which one user has claimed to be a “mura” reportedly affects all Galaxy S24 models and could potentially be a hardware flaw.

Even though the Galaxy S24 smartphones are garnering a lot of customer attention, the phones aren’t without problems. From the washed-out colors that Samsung is fixing with a software update to the display green line issue, the Galaxy S24 devices appear to be having a rough launch period. Unfortunately, Samsung’s troubles may not be over as reports of some Galaxy S24 phones having grainy displays have now started to emerge.

Users on Reddit and Samsung Community forums have noted that all three models, the Galaxy S24, the S24+, and the S24 Ultra, suffer from a grainy texture when displaying darker backgrounds like dark grey. Termed by one Galaxy S24 Ultra user as looking like “a layer of unmoving static on top of the darker colors”, the issue seems to be a hardware problem as one user claimed to notice the grain irrespective of the background color on the Galaxy S24+ (Available on Amazon).

Giving credibility to the report of it being a hardware issue, a user claimed to have checked and found grainy displays on different S24 models in store, while another supposedly heard from Samsung that it was indeed a hardware issue which prompted them to return their phone.

Galaxy S24 display potentially has a hardware flaw

Interestingly, Reddit user “erodeloeht”, who is a self-proclaimed “display scientist”, wrote a whole explanation as to why their Galaxy S24 Ultra was exhibiting this grainy pattern vs the Galaxy S23 Ultra (Available on Amazon). Called a “mura”, the grainy texture apparent over the pixels reportedly happens due to non-uniform subpixel intensity. Companies apply a “de-mura” process to reduce the issue but Samsung appears to have dropped the ball, explained the user.

To showcase the mura present on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, erodeloeht examined the device’s display under a microscope and noticed non-uniform pixels at 10% and 30% brightness. As a comparison, the Galaxy S23 Ultra and the iPhone 13 showed no such issues.

Long story short, although not all phones have been affected, Samsung may have another Galaxy S24 display issue on its hands. Unfortunately, if it is indeed a hardware issue, users may have to return their phones.

Finally, if you want to see if your Galaxy S24 phone has this grainy texture, head over to Test My Screen and see if your device has the issue by checking the display against solid backgrounds and performing a gradient test.
