When it comes to leaks and rumors surrounding Apple, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has maintained a pretty reliable track record so far. In his latest PowerOn newsletter, the analyst has revealed quite a lot of information regarding the upcoming M5 Macs from the Cupertino giant, including systems with the higher-end M5 Pro and M5 Max SoCs.
MacBook Air: Yet another spec bump
The MacBook Air (curr. $899 on Amazon) was last updated in March of this year with the M4 SoC and a fresh colorway. No other changes were made, and something very similar is expected for next year's refresh as well. According to Mark, the M5-powered MacBook Air will likely arrive in Spring of next year, and will not boast any other hardware changes. However, an updated LCD display is expected as early as 2027.
M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro
Of course, the higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros did not receive the M5 treatment last week. According to Mark, the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips should arrive sometime in the first quarter of next year, likely alongside the aforementioned MacBook Air.
The exact details regarding the M5 Pro and Max chips are unclear as of this writing, although it is worth noting that the vanilla M5 features a substantially more powerful GPU, so it would not be surprising to see the Pro and Max SoCs feature commendably improved GPUs.
Mac mini and M5 Ultra-powered Mac Studio
Once the M5 Pro and Max SoCs arrive early next year, the Mac mini and the Mac Studio should also be updated, according to Mark. Currently, the highest-end Mac Studio can only be equipped with an M3 Ultra SoC, with Apple confirming that not every generation will witness an "Ultra" variant. The M4 family did not feature an Ultra SoC, which likely indicates that the next Mac Studio might sport an M5 Ultra SoC.
