Details here
Amazon has given the Fire HD 8 a new Mediatek hexa-core SoC as part of the 2022 model update, which is supposed to be about 30 percent faster than the chipset in the previous generation according to the manufacturer. Previous generation. However, the Fire HD 8 (2022) still has an 8-inch display with a resolution of only 1,280 x 800 pixels.
Other improvements in the new 12th generation of the Fire HD 8 are customizable screen elements in the software, a longer battery life of up to 13 hours, and more modern wireless standards with Bluetooth 5.2. However, the Amazon tablet still supports only 5-watt charging.

Case - Amazon Fire HD 8 with a lot of plastic
Amazon has not made any major changes to the design compared to the previous generation. The edges around the screen including the aluminum-silicate glass of the Fire HD 8 are still very wide, so a display-to-surface ratio of just under 67% is achieved. However, the 2022 model has become a bit thinner and lighter. Compared to the predecessor (355 grams), the new Fire HD 8 tablet now weighs 337 grams and is also a bit thinner at 9.6 mm.
The back of the Amazon tablet is once again made of plastic materials, the latter is said to contain up to 35 percent of recycled consumer waste. Although the latest generation of the Fire HD 8 does not bring improvements, the build quality is still satisfactory.
Features - Amazon tablet with memory expansion
The Fire HD 8 (2022) can be purchased in different configuration variants, each with 2 GB of RAM. In the versions "with ads", the sponsored screen content is displayed on the Amazon tablet's lock screen as well as in idle mode. You can choose from:
Fire HD 8 (2022) | 32 GB memory | 115 euros with ads
Fire HD 8 (2022) | 32 GB storage | 130 euros without ads
Fire HD 8 (2022) | 64 GB storage | 145 Euros with ads
Fire HD 8 (2022) | 64 GB memory | 160 Euro without ads
After deducting the operating system, the user has approximately 25 GB at their own disposal. The Fire tablet's storage can also be expanded by up to 1 TB by adding a microSD card.
microSD card reader
The integrated microSD slot achieves a solid performance in the cross-platform disk test in combination with our Angelbird AV PRO V60 reference card. The Fire HD 8 2022's copy speed of about 20 MB/s is rather below average.

Software - Fire HD 8 2022 with long updates
The US online retailer's adaptations to the underlying Android operating system are very extensive. The Fire OS user interface is not based on the latest Android 13, but still on Android 11. The security updates cannot be read directly under Fire OS 8.3 either.
A real highlight of the inexpensive Amazon tablet is the very long supply of guaranteed software security updates for at least four years after the Fire HD 8 was last available for purchase as a new device on the manufacturer's website. Thus, the Fire Tab should receive security updates until at least 2027, and rather 2028. Here the Amazon tablet is on the same level as Apple.
Ex-factory, Fire tablets only offer the Amazon App Store, which offers some common apps, but lacks the broad app variety of a Play Store. Google services and the Google Play Store can be installed with some background knowledge. However, a Play Protect certification is not available, so some apps cannot be installed. DRM-protected content can be played in HD resolution on the 8-inch screen since the DRM Widevine certification is L1.
Communication and GNSS - Amazon tablet with Wi-Fi 5
Data transfer via the WLAN module succeeds with a speed of over 300 Mbit/s thanks to the 802.11 a/b/g/n and ac standards in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency range. The values determined with our reference router Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 are very satisfactory for a tablet in this price range, but not really fast.
There is no version of the Fire HD 8 2022 with mobile Internet access or with the option of positioning via satellite connection.

Cameras - Fire HD 8 2022 with single cam
A 2-megapixel front-facing camera is located in the display's upper frame. The quality of the photos is at a moderate level. Details are hardly present and colors look very pale. The Amazon tablet records videos with a resolution of up to 720p. At least 1080p recordings are possible with the "main camera", although the same 2-megapixel single cam is (probably) installed on the back.
Image sharpness and details of the recordings are not much more appealing than with the front cam in a lot of light, although the sharpness in the recordings is slightly better. The color reproduction under artificial light and with the help of the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport can be described as solid, but clearly brightened.

Main cameraMain cameraLow LightAccessories and warranty - Amazon Fire tablet with power adapter
The Fire HD 8 comes with a modular charger, which power output rated at 5 watts, and a USB Type-C cable. However, Amazon also offers additional accessories, which range from the matching protective case (RRP: 40 Euros) to the screen protector (RRP: 18 Euros).
The Fire HD 8 tablet is sold with a limited one-year manufacturer's warranty. The Limited Warranty is in addition to all applicable statutory warranty claims for consumer goods and does not affect them in any way.
Input devices & operation - Amazon tablet without fingerprint sensor
The capacitive touchscreen of the Fire HD 8 can be operated precisely up to the corners. However, the Amazon tablet cannot be unlocked via a fingerprint sensor or biometric face identification. You still have to use the classic PIN or password, which is not really up-to-date anymore.
Display - Fire HD 8 2022 with IPS panel
The Fire HD 8 2022's 8-inch IPS panel offers the same resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels as the Fire HD 8 from the years 2020 and 2018. Moreover, it is still not laminated. Surprisingly, our measurements show that the 2022 model has a lower brightness of less than 400 cd/m², which is much worse than the predecessor's result. The Fire HD 8 2022 also achieves only 398 cd/m² in the APL18 test.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM not detected | |||
In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8684 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured. |
Measurement series with fixed zoom level and different brightness settings
We examine the display's color representations with a photospectrometer and the CalMAN analysis software. The Amazon tablet offers a solid display calibration, but significant differences in the colors are visible even in the sRGB color space. Especially blue and magenta colors could be more saturated. However, the image reproduction is still acceptable for this price range with DeltaE deviations of 4.4 for the colors and 2.9 for the grayscale.

This means that the measured response time is worse than the average of all tested devices (32.8 ms). |
The Fire HD 8 does not feel comfortable outdoors and only offers limited readability in bright light situations - even during the test period in wintry conditions. The viewing angles are on a good level.
Performance - Amazon tablet with Mediatek SoC
Amazon once again relies on a MediaTek SoC for its entry-level tablet, in the case of the Fire HD 8 2022 on an MT8169A. This is based on six, rather weak Cortex-A55 cores (2.0 GHz). The integrated graphics unit is a Mali-G52 MP2.
The system speed of the Amazon tablet is solid in everyday use, but not free of stutters. Scrolling Internet pages is not really smooth most of the time, either. In our benchmark tests, the 2022 model usually performs 15 to 30 percent ahead of the predecessor model. The performance nevertheless should be assessed as very low. The eMMC storage type in particular is getting on in years and is very slow.
Due to the low memory configuration of only 2 GB RAM, some benchmarks cannot be executed. Furthermore, tests like Geekbench or CrossMark abort during the measurement.

Power management - Amazon tablet consumes a lot of power
Power consumption
Using the included 5-watt charger, the Fire tablet takes about 4.5 hours for a full charge cycle. According to Amazon, the charging time is reduced to less than 3 hours with the optional 9-watt charger and less than 2.5 hours with the 15-watt charger.
The power consumption of the 2022 model is significantly higher than that of the predecessor and is not very efficient with 1.4 watts in idle.

Battery life
According to the manufacturer, the 4,850 mAhbattery installed in the Fire HD 8 should enable 13 hours of playback. We can confirm this value in our practical Wi-Fi test with a display brightness of 150 cd/m². After about 12 hours, the Fire Tab exits all applications at 20% and goes into standby. Thus, Amazon's tablet theoretically lasts about 15 hours in our measurements.

Verdict
The Fire HD 8 2022 is only a partly successful upgrade to the predecessor from the year 2020. It is difficult to judge an Amazon tablet solely based on its technical specifications, but the current Fire generation does not offer any added value compared to the 2020 model in many areas - in some cases, it is even more of a step backward.
The still relatively low-resolution IPS panel cannot convince with a peak brightness of less than 400 cd/m² in our measurements. The lack of biometric unlocking options and the slow eMMC storage type are also not really up to date anymore.
The evaluation of the Fire HD 8 depends on the user's affinity for the US giant because the Amazon tablet can only really be used with an Amazon account and Prime membership.
The Fire HD 8 2022 shows its strength in software support, which is supposed to last until at least 2027, probably even longer, according to Amazon. Apart from the low price, Amazon's tablet offers a solid build and little waste heat. The market hardly offers any small tablet alternatives. The closest match for the requirements profile of a Fire HD8 buyer is a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite.
