Case and features - Fire HD 8 Kids 2022 and Kids Pro 2022 with 3.5 mm jack
The Fire HD 8 Kids is designed for children ages 3 to 7, while the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro is designed for school-aged children. Both tablets include one year of Amazon Kids+ with access to entertainment and educational content, as well as a solid protective case and a 2-year worry-free warranty. Otherwise, the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids and Kids Pro is a standard Fire HD 8 2022 so we can refer to our detailed review of the Amazon tablet.
The colorful protective cases are available in purple, red, and blue (Kids Edition) as well as in blue-green (Kids Pro). The Pro version also has two design variants with a cyber and rainbow motif to choose from.
The sturdy cases have an infinitely adjustable stand that allows the tablet to be used without holding it in the hands. The case is made of a kind of plastic-foam mix, which seems slightly flexible and turns out to be quite massive - especially in the Kids Edition, whose case is much stronger than the Pro version's case due to the lower age recommendation.
If the Fire tablet should still suffer any damage, the two-year Carefree Warranty will help to replace Fire HD 8 Kids and Kids Pro free of charge.
Besides a USB-C port, the Amazon tablets can still be connected to child-friendly headphones with a 3.5 mm jack.

Communication, software and operation - Fire HD 8 Kids 2022 and Kids Pro 2022 with parent dashboard
Data transfer via the WLAN module succeeds with a solid speed of over 300 Mbit/s in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency range thanks to the 802.11 a/b/g/a and ac standards with our reference router Asus ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000.
The user interface of the Amazon tablet is based on Fire OS and not the classic Android. Both child tabs receive guaranteed software security updates for at least four years. The Parental Dashboard allows filtering content, setting time limits, and accessing additional content like apps with its parental controls. Children cannot access social media or the app store without parental permission - which is given immediately upon request via email to the Amazon account. The Amazon Kids web browser also allows filtered access to the Internet and blocks websites that are not age-appropriate.
Technically, the Kids Edition and Kids Pro of the Fire HD 8 2022 do not differ from the normal version, so the Amazon tablets cannot be unlocked via a fingerprint sensor or biometric face recognition.

Cameras - Fire HD 8 Kids 2022 and Kids Pro 2022 with 2 MP
A 2-megapixel camera is installed in the display's upper frame and on the back. The Amazon tablet records videos with a resolution of up to 720p, and at least 1080p recordings are possible with the main camera.
Sharpness and details of the pictures should meet the demands of youngsters in bright light, even though not much should be expected in terms of quality. However, the color reproduction under artificial light and with the help of the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport can be described as solid, but clearly brightened.

Display - Fire HD 8 Kids 2022 and Kids Pro 2022 with IPS
The 8-inch LCD panel of the Fire HD 8 Kids 2022 and Fire HD 8 Kids Pro 2022 offers the same resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels as the regular Fire HD 8.
Besides the low pixel density of under 200 PPI, the maximum brightness of under 400 cd/m² is also not very high. The Amazon tablets also only achieve 398 cd/m² in the APL18 test. Accordingly, the little ones will have to put up with limited readability when used in the garden.
We examined the display's color reproduction with a photospectrometer and the CalMAN analysis software. The IPS panel of the Kids Edition and Kids Pro offer a solid display calibration, but significant color differences are visible even in the sRGB color space.

Performance, emissions and battery life - Fire HD 8 Kids 2022 and Kids Pro 2022 with Mediatek SoC
Amazon relies on a MediaTek MT8169A for its children's tablets. This is based on six, rather low-performance Cortex-A55 cores (2.0 GHz). The integrated graphics unit is a Mali-G52 MP2.
The system speed is solid in everyday use, but not free of stutters. Internet scrolling is not really smooth most of the time, either. The youngster often has to be patient here. The same applies to the loading times. The eMMC storage type used is meanwhile outdated and very slow.
The casing's surface temperatures are on a harmless level and are practically hardly noticeable in combination with the thick protective cover.
The speaker of the Fire HD 8 Kids and Kids Pro quite linearly renders tones from mid and high frequencies. The quality is okay for playing media and children's apps. However, a volume lock is not available in the settings menus, which does not really fit into the manufacturer's concept.
The power consumption of the Amazon tablets is clearly above the 2020 models and is not very efficient with 1.4 watts in idle. The runtimes are nevertheless good in our practical WLAN test with a display brightness of 150 cd/m².

Verdict
The Fire HD 8 Kids 2022 and Kids Pro 2022 offer a well-thought-out concept for children's tablet use including parental supervision. A solid-looking protective case and an extensive warranty round off the overall picture.
The Kids and Kids Pro Edition of the Fire HD 8 are good children's tablets. However, why a slightly thinner case deserves the name addition "Pro" still remains the manufacturer's secret.
However, our review of the Fire HD 8 2022 also applies to children's tablets from Amazon; from a technical point of view, the kids' versions do not differ from the normal Fire Tab. We see a lot of room for improvement in the display as well as in the performance and features.
If you are looking for a small and inexpensive tablet for your children and can get by with Google's Family Link as a monitoring tool, you will find a suitable alternative with the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite.

The Fire HD 8 Kids 2022 and Kids Pro 2022 can be purchased for an MSRP of 160 euros directly from Amazon.de or from other online stores, such as Cyberport.de.
