With the AVR-S980H, Denon has launched a new AV receiver for home cinema that is set to support Dolby Atmos as well as the wireless connection of multiroom speakers as a wireless sound system—though there is still a catch.

Today, Denon launched a new AV receiver, the AVR-S980H. According to the manufacturer, the home cinema receiver can be ordered directly from them from yesterday onwards, though it is currently marked as "not available" there. The successor to the AVR-S970H (approx. 510 euros at Amazon) is not yet listed in other shops. The recommended retail price is 899 euros.

Denon promises an easy setup in just a few steps for the AVR-S980H, aiming to bring home cinema sound into the living room without complication. The AV receiver provides 7.2 channels for this purpose; when used with Dolby Atmos, it can, for example, be operated in a 5.2.2-channel setup with two subwoofers and two ceiling speakers. The amplifier provides 90 watts per channel, which should represent sufficient power for living room home cinemas.

The Audyssey MultEQ room acoustic correction system calibrates the speakers and automatically adjusts their levels and distances to the specific conditions and the listening area. In addition to Dolby Atmos, the Denon AVR-S980H supports, among other things, 4K and 8K video, gaming with 1440p pass-through and AMD FreeSync, as well as DTS:X, Dolby Vision, and HDR10+. For audio streaming, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and HEOS Multiroom Audio are on board.

Furthermore, Denon has announced that a future update will allow the AVR-S980H to use the new Denon Home 200, 400, and 600 multiroom speakers as wireless surround speakers. This wireless surround function eliminates the need to run speaker cables, which can be particularly practical for the rear speakers. However, it is currently not yet known when the firmware update will be rolled out.
