The Acer Swift 1 challenges Chromebook’s dominance of the budget market, but it’s not quite the knockout punch that’s needed.

Elegant endurance runner. Acer's 14-incher offers an excellent battery life, an elegant, slim metal case, a keyboard illumination, and a matte IPS display. The new Pentium Silver N5000 quad-core processor has significantly more computing power than its predecessor, advancing into the range of earlier Core-i3 processors with this. You have to pay almost 600 Euros (~$707) for the whole package.

If you are shopping for a new laptop for work or study purposes and you’re on a tight budget, I can recommend the Acer Swift 1 as a good option. It’s not quite the bargain of the century – you will need to keep an eye on that battery and it’s not suitable for even the lightest of photo editing tasks – but for word processing, web browsing, emails and a spot of occasional Netflix, it’s fine, not to mention cheap. Just go easy on it.

Let’s start our summary with the price of this notebook. Currently, it can be found for anywhere between $250-500, depending on the specification you get. However, keep in mind that a simple, budget offering, would rarely provide an all-metal build, a 1080p IPS display, 8GB of memory and ultimately – 512GB of PCIe x2 storage. Despite the unexciting processor from a performance standpoint, this laptop was fast enough in daily use.

If your leading laptop priorities are extreme portability, sterling battery life, and a low price tag, then the Acer Swift 1 is quite a hard package to beat. It sports a tidy, compact design, will last an extended work-day on a single charge, and prices start from a very reasonable £350. Connectivity is strong too, with USB-C and HDMI ports included, as well as a fingerprint reader and Wi-Fi 6 support. While performance is perfectly solid at the entry and mid-point of the pricing range, you might find it a little wanting if you were to splash out an extra £200 on the top model covered here. The competition gets a lot more serious when you cross that £500 threshold. Provided you stick with the mid-spec models, however, the Acer Swift 1 is an excellent portable pick.

A tight budget often means you’re restricted to clunky laptops. That’s not the case with the Acer Swift 1 though. It’s sleek, slim and has a decent quality screen, a long-lasting battery and it even has a fingerprint sensor. You do lose out on performance, but that shouldn’t be a huge issue if you just need it for typing, browsing and streaming Netflix.

Acer’s 14-inch laptop scores some major points thanks to its great battery life, silent operation, keyboard backlight and matte IPS screen. The quad-core Pentium Silver N6000 performs about as well as a Skylake chip. Windows is not included. The whole package costs 279 Euros (~$315).

If portability, an all-day battery and a low price tag top your list of laptop priorities, the Acer Swift 1 is hard to beat. Performance is solid for the price you pay, just bear in mind that it comes with limitations, and if you’re looking to run any high-demand software or games, this isn’t the laptop for you. (If you do want a cheap alternative, consider one of the best Chromebooks for students.) It won’t get you through complex tasks and will struggle with large games, but if you need it simply to write documents, surf the web and watch videos, it's more than capable. Connectivity is good, with USB-C and HDMI ports included, and the fingerprint reader for added security is a nice bonus. Overall, the Acer Swift 1 is a good budget laptop, with a design that makes it look more premium than the price tag suggests. Its feature set, particularly price, battery life and portability, make it a great choice for students or for anyone wanting an everyday device to share at home.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
No weight comment found (one expected)!
76.91%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
