Acer Swift 1: Well-priced 14-inch laptop with outstanding battery life

Review of the Acer Swift 1 SF114-34: Silent and long-lasting 14-inch laptop
Review of the Acer Swift 1 SF114-34: Silent and long-lasting 14-inch laptop
Acer’s 14-inch laptop scores some major points thanks to its great battery life, silent operation, keyboard backlight and matte IPS screen. The quad-core Pentium Silver N6000 performs about as well as a Skylake chip. Windows is not included.

The Acer Swift 1 SF114-34 is a slim and light 14-inch notebook. Even though it is a low-end device, it uses premium materials: The chassis and the back of the display lid are made of metal. The laptop comes in the following colour schemes: Silver (our review model), Gold and Pink. At the time of our review, the laptop sells for 279 Euros (~$315).

The Swift 1 features the Pentium Silver N6000, 4 GB of RAM (soldered-on, no slots), and a 128 GB eMMC module. The Acer laptop can run office and web-based applications. The system can be easily overwhelmed. The laptop can only handle a few open tabs or background apps simultaneously. The amount of RAM is the main bottleneck here. This is why we recommend getting a Swift 1 model with 8 GB of RAM.

Thanks to a passively cooled SoC, the device operates absolutely silently. This is why it can be used in very quiet environments. The Swift 1 never gets too hot. The 50.3-Wh battery allows the devices to achieve battery runtimes of 11 to 16 hours, meaning that users will not have to carry around Acer’s proprietary charger. However, it is worth mentioning that the Swift 1 cannot be charged via the USB-C port.

Our review device does not ship with Windows. Those who already have a Windows licence can easily install Windows 10. Linux can be used as an alternative. We were able to install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (64 Bit) without any issues. Almost all of the Acer Swift 1’s hardware was instantly recognised and functioned as expected.

What started as a side job during my computer science studies later became my main job: For more than 20 years now I have been working as an editor and author in the IT sector. While working in the print sector I also contributed to the creation of various loose-leaf publications and published original written pieces. I have been working for Notebookcheck since 2012.

I am a big fan of technology, which is why I try to keep up with it. Among my other passions are literature and writing, and so it should not be surprising to anyone at all that I have a four-year bachelor's degree in philology. However, my interests are not limited just to the world of technology, or, for that matter, the world of literature. I am also interested in people and the stories they have to tell. And more recently, I took an interest in artificial intelligence.
