AMD claimed that most gamers don’t need more than 8 GB VRAM. Both Nvidia and AMD have released GPUs that have 8 GB VRAM within their latest generation lineup. But it looks like gamers don’t want these GPUs and prefer the 16 GB variants, despite their higher cost. A German retailer has provided evidence of that with its RTX 5060 Ti and Radeon RX 9060 XT sales.
Mindfactory shows its product listings with number of units sold. When looking at listings for the RTX 5060 Ti, there is a clear and significant disparity between sales of the 16 GB variant and the 8 GB variant. It is a similar story with the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT GPU. For the Nvidia offering, the Palit RTX 5060 Ti Infinity 3 GPU with 16 GB VRAM, which is one of the cheapest models, has sold over 840 units while the Palit RTX 5060 Ti Dual with 8 GB VRAM has sold 30 to 40 units. Similarly, The MSI RTX 5060 Ti Ventus 2X OC Plus 16 GB saw over 450 units sold while the 8 GB variant sits in the 40 to 50 units range.
For AMD, the XFX RX 9060 XT Switch OC 16 GB sold over 290 units while the 8 GB variant about five to 10 units. The story is the same across the board partner Radeon RX 9060 XT GPUs. This shows customers are willing to shell out the $50 to $70 extra for the higher VRAM variant.
It should be noted that this is data from one retailer and may not be indicative of the global market. However, gamers have seen the limitations of 8 GB VRAM especially at resolutions higher than 1080p. AMD’s justification for 8 GB VRAM GPUs states most gamers are still playing at 1080p but that was countered by fans wanting the company to price these GPUs lower. The RTX 5060 TI 8 GB has an MSRP of $379 while the Radeon RX 9060 XT 8 GB has an MSRP of $300.
