A Fallout 4 modder has ported the entirety of Morrowind to the in-game Pip-Boy

Modder RPGKing117 has taken things a bit too far by playing a Bethesda game inside the studio’s classic Fallout 4 Pip-Boy. The entirety of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind can now be played right on your Fallout 4 Pip-Boy. Some Morrowind purists took offense when the modder added quest markers to Morrowind. Backlash ensued, and the modder decided to make up for it by porting Morrowind into Fallout 4.
Scroll through the mod’s Nexus Mods page, and you’ll find that RPGKing117 has summed up the contents of the mod perfectly, stating, “Morrowind. On your Pip-Boy. For real.”
Gamers looking for new mods on the popular modding platform are in awe of this feat. One user said, “This is amazing, the Pip-Boy definitely needs more games. Imagine playing Fallout 1 on it.” Another user stated that the mod is “a better argument for preservation than half the remaster strategies in the industry.”
RPGKing117 showcased the Morrowind Pip-Boy mod on YouTube, showing the full game running on a computer terminal in Fallout 4. Of course, the Pip-Boy also works as a portable gaming handheld and runs the game.
While it’s a pretty cool concept on the surface, it’s not the best way to experience a 100-hour pure RPG epic in the middle of the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the Commonwealth. The computer terminal’s green, muddy filter doesn’t make it worthwhile to play Morrowind in Fallout 4. Likewise, running two video games at the same time requires a decently powerful PC, so it wouldn’t be ideal for something like a Steam Deck or similar handheld.
So, how did RPGKing117 manage to get the game running inside Fallout 4 in the first place? The modder is using a custom version of OpenMW, the popular open-source Morrowind engine. As RPGKing117 explains on his GitHub page, “OpenMW runs in a hidden window locked to 876x700, which is then upscaled to 1024x1024 and streams its framebuffer directly into Fallout 4’s Pip-Boy or computer terminals in real time.”
The Morrowind holotape is handled by a custom F4SE plugin, which manages the holotape insertion, memory sharing, and allocation, and passes through keyboard inputs to play Morrowind while you’re still in Fallout 4’s world.
