One of Fallout: New Vegas' biggest total conversion mods is now free on GOG with one-click installation in tow

If you haven’t gotten around to Fallout: New Vegas or the many conversion mods built for it, now is a great time to try Fallout: New California. The fan-made prequel, first released in 2018, is now available on GOG as a free one-click installation mod for Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition. For those who have yet to get a copy, Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition is also on sale at GOG for $7.99 until August 14, 2026. That means players no longer need to download separate files from ModDB and hope the total conversion mod loads correctly.

A mod unlike any other you will encounter in the Fallout universe

GOG announced Fallout New California in a separate post, calling it “one of the biggest story mods ever made,” with a “standalone campaign” that houses “an entirely new map with brand-new areas, starting inside Vault 18 and spanning the Fallout New California wasteland.”

For existing Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition owners on GOG, the mod looks especially worth checking out. The prequel lets players “fight an epic war between the NCR, Enclave, Raiders, and Super Mutants,” complete with studio-quality voice acting, a dynamic radio, and eight unique companions.

The developers behind New California describe the mod’s story more personally on its GOG store page: “In Fallout: New California, you play as the kid from Vault 18. Orphan. Loner. Mutant. On the last big night of the Vault Ball season in 2260, you make a fateful decision that will change the course of your life, and eventually the future of the New California Republic.”

Fallout: New California also has a long history of its own. The project began in 2011 as Fallout: Project Brazil before being renamed Fallout: New California in September 2017. A public beta followed on October 23, 2018, after Studio Radian-Helix Media spent nearly seven years developing the project. Now, after nearly eight years since its beta release, it is available to download for free on GOG with just one click.

The biggest advantage is that GOG’s One-Click build of Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition comes pre-patched to run total conversion mods like New California. The One-Click feature handles the installation automatically, sparing players from manually dragging and dropping files into the game’s root directory.
