8BitDo has released the Retro Cube 2 Speaker - N Edition, announced in October in celebration of the NES 40th anniversary. The speaker, which is a successor to the Retro Cube Speaker released in 2016, brings a handful of new features while keeping some from the original.
The Retro Cube 2 Speaker - N Edition was previously available to pre-order following its announcement in October. However, it is now available to purchase and has begun shipping to those who pre-ordered. It is priced at $49.99 and is exclusive to the 8BitDo eShop.
The Retro Cube 2 Speaker - N Edition has an NES-inspired design, with controls at the top that look like the D-Pad on a NES controller. It features two 5W speakers and can be paired with a second unit for a true stereo experience.
While it has ditched the aux port of its predecessor, the Retro Cube 2 Speaker - N Edition now supports connecting over 2.4GHz wireless (USB-C adapter included) and wired USB-C in addition to Bluetooth 5.3. There's a gaming mode for low-latency, and a microphone, so users can make calls with it.
Another new feature of the speaker is support for wireless charging. 8BitDo includes a wireless charging dock that has a slot for the 2.4GHz USB-C adapter. With the charging dock, users will be able to charge the speaker's 2,000mAh battery from empty to full within a few hours.
With respect to battery life, the Retro Cube 2 Speaker - N Edition will provide up to 30 hours of playback, which is a significant upgrade from the 8 hours of the previous generation.
The Retro Cube 2 Speaker - N Edition is one of three products 8BitDo announced this year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The others are a NES-themed version of the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth controller (available on Amazon for $69.99) and the Retro 68 Keyboard - NES 40th Limited Edition, which will be released in January 2026.
