Intel Core i7-640M vs Intel Core i3-4025U vs Intel Core i3-4010U

Intel Core i7-640M

► remove from comparison Intel 640M

The Intel Core i7-640M is a high end dual core CPU for laptops and clocks (due to the Turbo Mode) from 2.8 to 3.46 GHz. Each core is based on the Nehalem (Westmere) micro-architecture. Hyperthreading enables the Dual Core CPU to handle 4 threads at once (for a better usage of the pipeline). Therefore, the i7-640M is related to the other i5 and i3 dual core CPUs and not the quad-core i7 CPUs.

A feature of the new Core i7-640M is the integrated graphics card called Intel HD Graphics (GMA HD) and memory controller. Both are on a separate die that is still manufactured in 45nm whereas the CPU die is already manufactured in the new 32nm process.

The 32nm cpu cores of the Westmere generation can also process some new instructions to accelerate AES encryptions. Compared to the slower i5 versions without AES features, the 3DMark Vantage Communication Score showed a significant increase with AES enabled CPUs.

The integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) graphics card is clocked with 500-733 MHz and performs clearly faster than the old GMA 4500MHD. A GeForce 9400M (ION) should still be a bit faster (especially as Nvidia and ATI cards have a better driver support than Intel up to now).

The power consumption of 35 Watt TDP (max.) counts for the whole package and therefore it is clearly better than the 35 Watt TDP of the Core 2 Duo T-series (CPU alone).

The Core i7-640M should not be mistaken with the similar named but slower low voltage Core i7-640LM and Core i7-640UM models.

Intel Core i3-4025U

► remove from comparison Intel 4025U

The Intel Core i3-4025U is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for ultrabooks, which has been presented in Q2/2014. It is based on the Haswell architecture and manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyperthreading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel, leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 1.9 GHz (no Turbo Boost support). Compared to the Core i3-4030U, the 4025U offers a slightly lower GPU clock, less I/O-ports and lacks support for VT-d.

Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports, improving the performance per clock by almost 10 percent. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.

According to the clock rate, the performance of the Core i3-4025U is right between the Core i3-4100U (1.8 GHz) and Core i3-4158U (2.0 GHz). Thus, the CPU has sufficient power for office and multimedia purposes as well as most applications.

The integrated HD Graphics 4400 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 200 - 950 MHz (with Turbo Boost), making it somewhat faster than the former HD Graphics 4000 (at similar clocks). However, the HD 4400 is slightly slower than the HD 5000 of other ULV models.

The Core i3-4025U is rated at a TDP of 15 W including graphics card, memory controller, VRMs and the integrated chipset.  Therefore, the CPU is suited for small ultrabooks 11-inches or greater.

Intel Core i3-4010U

► remove from comparison Intel 4010U

The Intel Core i3-4010U is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for ultrabooks launched in Q2 2013. It is based on the Haswell architecture and is manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyper-Treading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel, leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 1.7 GHz and includes no Turbo Boost support.

The performance of the Core i3-4010U is slightly above the old and slightly higher clocked Core i3-3217U. However, when using new instruction sets such as AVX2 the performance can be significantly better. Thus, the CPU has sufficient power for office and multimedia purposes as well as most applications.

The integrated HD Graphics 4400 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 200 - 1000 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it somewhat faster than the former HD Graphics 4000 at similar clock speeds. However, the HD 4400 is a bit slower than the HD 5000 found on a number of other ULV models.

The Core i3-4010U is rated at a TDP of 15 W including the graphics card, memory controller, VRMs and the integrated chipset. Therefore, the CPU is suited for small ultrabooks 11-inches or greater.
