Intel Core i3-4120U vs Intel Core i5-3337U vs Intel Core i5-3439Y

Intel Core i3-4120U

► remove from comparison Intel 4120U

The Intel Core i3-4120U is an ULV (ultra low voltage) dual-core processor for ultrabooks launched in Q2 2014. It is based on the Haswell architecture and is manufactured in 22nm. Due to Hyper-Threading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel, leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 2.0 GHz and includes no Turbo Boost support.

Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports, improving performance per clock by almost 10 percent. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.

According to the identical clock rate, the Core i3-4120U offers the same performance as the Core i3-4158U (28 W TDP). Thus, the CPU has sufficient power for office and multimedia purposes as well as most applications.

The integrated HD Graphics 4400 offers 20 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 200 - 1000 MHz with Turbo Boost, making it somewhat faster than the former HD Graphics 4000 at similar clock speeds. However, the HD 4400 is somewhat slower than the HD 5000 of other ULV models.

The Core i3-4120U is rated at a TDP of 15 W including the graphics card, memory controller, VRMs and the integrated chipset. Therefore, the CPU is suited for small ultrabooks 11-inches or greater.

Intel Core i5-3337U

► remove from comparison

The Intel Core i5-3337U is an ULV-processor for laptops based on the Ivy Bridge architecture released in Q1 2013. Due to Hyperthreading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 1.8 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 2.5 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 2.7 GHz (for 1 active core). As its Sandy-Bridge-based predecessors, it offers a 3 MB L3-Cache.

Ivy Bridge is an enhanced die shrink of the Sandy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm (versus 32nm Sandy Bridge CPUs) and are the first to introduce 3D transistors for increased energy efficiency when compared to similarly clocked Sandy Bridge processors. Other new features are integrated PCI Express 3.0 and  DDR3(L)-1600 support.

The performance of the Core i5-3337U is slightly above a similarly clocked Sandy Bridge processor due to some architectural improvements. Therefore, overall performance is similar to the former Core i7-2677M or a Core i3-2330M.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 offers 16 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 350 MHz up to 1100 MHz with Turbo Boost, delivering a performance comparable with an AMD Radeon HD 6620G.

The ULV-CPUs are rated at a TDP of 17 W including graphics card and memory controller.  Therefore, the CPU is suited for small laptops and ultrabooks.

Intel Core i5-3439Y

► remove from comparison

The Intel Core i5-3439Y is an ULV-processor for ultrabooks and tablets based on the Ivy Bridge architecture. Due to Hyperthreading, the two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 1.5 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 2.1 GHz (for 2 active cores) and 2.3 GHz (for 1 active core). As other dual core Core i5, it offers a 3 MB L3-Cache.

The performance of the Core i5-3439Y is limited by the very low TDP. Therefore, the maximum turbo clocks are rarely achieved. Overall, the 3439Y should be a bit faster than the Core i3-3217U.

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 offers 16 Execution Units (EUs) clocked at 350 MHz up to 850 MHz with Turbo Boost, delivering a performance comparable with an AMD Radeon HD 6520G.

The 3439Y is rated at a TDP of 13 W including graphics card and memory controller. If necessary, the TDP can be set to an even lower value of 10 W (cTDP Down). Therefore, the CPU is suited for tablets and ultrabooks.
