Many loyalists continue to use the PS3 and its marketplace. The PlayStation Store on the console has produced error messages for multiple days, frustrating these users. Since the PS4 and PS5 offer an incomplete selection of PS3 games, fans cling to the 2006 system.

In early 2023, the PS3 reportedly still had around 2 million users. Even if that number has since diminished, many gamers rely on the console’s PlayStation Store. Unfortunately, starting on August 6th, Reddit posters began encountering maintenance messages. As reported by Twisted Voxel, the issue remains unresolved for many users, limiting access to favorite retro PS3 games.

The problems aren’t universal, and customers in some regions can still make purchases from the PS3 PlayStation Store. Also, a workaround that requires quick reflexes is to add items to carts before the error message appears. Even so, the 2021 controversy becomes relevant when Sony revealed that it would disable the PS Store on the PS3 and Vita. Although the company reversed its decision, it’s unclear how long support for the aging consoles will continue.

Unlike with the PS4 and PS5, the PS3 store app uses different software with separate libraries. Without backward compatibility found on more recent consoles, many fans of retro games refuse to part with the PS3. The alternatives, which include cloud streaming, often have significant drawbacks.

Sony launched the PlayStation Classics Catalog in 2022, reintroducing audiences to PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles. Still, the lineup is far from complete, and PS3 games are streamed rather than running natively. Cloud streaming can introduce latency, making it frustrating to time button presses. Players also must subscribe to the Premium Tier of PlayStation Plus to enjoy the games.

It’s unlikely that Sony would shut down the PlayStation Store on the PS3 without notice. In several instances, even PS5 users have suffered extended downtime with the PlayStation Network and marketplace. Nevertheless, players who can still make purchases are quickly stocking up on their favorite retro games.
