Acer to stick with DDR2 RAM for part of its notebook lineup
The move comes in as supply of DDR3 RAM is becoming tight
According to a report published by Digitimes, Acer has decided to stick with DDR2 memory modules for part of its notebook lineup, including ultra-thin models, instead of DDR3 RAM because supplies of DDR3 memory modules have increasingly become tight. Acer earlier claimed that it would use DDR3 memory modules for all the notebooks in the future but it seems that Acer can not live up to this statement for the time-being. Almost half of Acer’s notebook lineup features DDR3 RAM.
Acer had also planned to adopt DDR3 memory for all of its ultra-thin notebooks, but the new strategy has affected its recently launched 11.6-inch Aspire 1410 ultra-thin notebook which adopts DDR2 RAM instead. This will definitely have an effect on the penetration of DDR3 memory modules in the market but, analysts believe that this effect will be short-lived because in 2010 Intel will launch the Calpella platform which uses DDR3 RAM.
Moreover, the price of DDR3 RAM is about 50-60% higher than that DDR2 RAM and it is expected that these prices will further shoot up as demand increases and supply reduces. The only one who seems to benefit from all this is the manufacturers of DDR2 memory modules.
