Data Ltd Inc, which is a privately held company engaged in the design and manufacturing of rugged mobile computers, has recently launched the DLI 8400 ultra-mobile rugged tablet PC. It is suited to a wide variety of harsh work environments as it comes housed in an impact-resistant ABS+PC polymer shell and is also protected against water and dust. The unit can also handle shocks, temperature variation and vibration. Although this device isn’t that pretty but it sure does pack in loads of impressive features like wireless communications, GPS, field payment and mobile computing.

The DLI 8400 is powered by an industrial-class Intel Atom processor which offers improved performance, lower power consumption, lower cost and extended temperature range which allows the device to work well in the harsh work environments. The device promises a battery life of up to 9 hours thanks to the dual hot-swappable batteries. It has a 7-inch LED touchscreen which can be easily read in sunlight. The touchscreen panel is available as either a resistive or digitizing screen. For data input there is an ergonomically designed backlit QWERTY keyboard. Voice capture and control is handled by the built-in dual high sensitivity microphones.

For connectivity the DLI 8400 has WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n), cellular (CDMA or GPRS), and Bluetooth which can run concurrently. Other important features on the device are as follows:

·         SD card reader

·         Biometrics

·         2D imager/barcode scanner

This device comes with a vehicle cradle which adds various ports like RS232, USB, Ethernet and Dual RF Pass-Through Connectors for external GPS and cellular antennas. Additional accessories include the following:

·         Desktop Cradle

·         3-Bay Battery Charger

·         IP64 Rugged USB Backlit Keyboard

·         Padded Handle

While initially the DLI 8400 was designed for mobile field service and transportation but it can also be used in retail, hospitality, agriculture, and manufacturing sectors. The price tag of this device is $1795 for base configuration.
