Intel is not phasing out Atom Z
Netbook users may still continue to see Atom Z powered machines
A few days ago, Digitimes reported that Intel is planning to phase out the Atom Z-series line of processors which are used to power netbooks. It was pointed out that Intel will stop the supply of Atom Z processors by the end of this year. The reason for this move was that Intel wanted to clearly define the boundary between netbooks and MIDs (mobile internet device).
Intel Atom Z series, codename Silverthorne, includes ultra-low power parts that draw less than a watt at idle and are typically used for mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and other types of handheld computing devices. The upper end of the Silverthorne line-up includes much more powerful processors like the Atom Z520 and Atom Z530. These processors have found use in many netbooks from manufacturers like Acer, Asus, and MSI.
In an e-mailed reply to CRN.com, Intel’s spokesperson has refuted any claims regarding the phase-out of the Atom Z-series processors. This means that devices like Asus Eee PC T91, Sony Vaio P, and many more will still be available to users.
