OCZ launches Summit series SSD drives
This 2.5-inch solid state drive offers higher read and write speeds
After the launch of the Vertex series of solid state drives, California based OCZ technology group has now launched the Summit series of 2.5-inch SATA II solid state drives. The company claims that it has launched this product to meet the stringent demands of business professionals, enthusiasts, and entry-level enterprise applications. These drives have a 128MB cache, which is double the size of the previous Vertex series. The larger cache and the premium flash memory has helped the company to achieve read and write speeds of 220 MB/sec and 200MB/sec respectively.
The Summit series SSD drives will be available in 60GB, 120GB, and 250GB sizes. While the later two models will have higher read and write speeds as mentioned above, the 60GB model will be capable of a read speed of 200MB/sec and write speed of 125MB/sec. The drive is quite lightweight at 77g and uses very little power approx 2W in operation and .5W in stand by.
Usually the normal hard disk drives have a lifetime warranty but this SSD has a warranty of only 2 years. This raises doubts about the shelf life of solid state drives. OCZ suggests, not to defragment the SSD drives, as doing so may cause the performance to suffer. The 120GB version of this SSD would be available at a price of $380.
