Apple to use carbon fiber for MacBook Air to shed weight?
It seems Apple is not satisfied with the three-pound weight of the almost exclusively aluminum MacBook Air, so it is investigating the possibility of building some of the ultraportable out of carbon fiber. This should bring the Air’s weight down to under three pounds without decreasing the strength of the body. The modification would be done to just the lower case, which is the second-heaviest component of the system. Replacing it with carbon fiber would bring the Air's weight down to 2.78 pounds, which is lighter than the Samsung X360.
The MacBook Air was just updated (new CPU and chipset) and so is unlikely to receive the replacement until its next update sometime in 2009.
