In the computer world, you grow bigger only by getting smaller. First there were huge monsters of machines, and then came personal computers, notebooks and now netbooks.

Technology research firm Gartner says that although the overall worldwide computer shipment growth rate reduced during this recession, but coming 2009 will see a huge boost in the sales of Netbooks. They estimates that worldwide shipment of Netbooks will jump by 50% to 7.8 million units in 2009 from 5.2 million in 2008, in comparison to laptop or notebook shipments which will only grow by 15% . They both are expected to eat on desktop market shares, which will decline about 21% in 2009, as well as expanding to new markets, according to data from Citi investment research.

“It looks like mini-notebooks are definitely stronger than regular notebook growth rates and maybe eating up traditional notebook shipment,” says Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa.

But it is also being speculated that Netbook sales will see this tremendous rise in 2009, it probably will fail to offset declining PC market.
