HP “Firefly with Voodoo DNA” concept

HP tipped of showcasing the Voodoo concept notebook called “Firefly” at the CES

CES has always been a hotbed for the companies to showcase their new products. This year should be no difference. Just ahead of this year’s CES at Las Vegas, starting from January 8th, HP tipped of showcasing what can be termed as the “missing link” between desktop and notebooks, at least in terms of size, weight and power.

Called “Firefly with Voodoo DNA” by HP, this Voodoo concept notebook should sport a big 17.1-inch 1920×1200 screen, a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 250GB 7,200 RPM hard drive, and two ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 GPUs set up in Crossfire mode.

Other features include backlit keyboard, Creative X-Fi audio, and a built-in webcam with night vision features. Also it places the track-pad on the right side of the keyboard, rather than positioning it at a more conventional position-below. This should be of some discomfort to the lefties.

The keyboard features customizable backlighting, has HP’s QuickPlay controls for playing, skipping, and pausing music or video. There are toggle switches for wireless and audio mute, as well as controls for volume, treble, and bass levels. The entire notebook has the light etching and imprint design found on HP’s dv series notebooks.

One of the most innovative designs is that in addition to the main 17.1" screen, there's a secondary 4.3" 800x480 display underneath, which anything can be dragged to. (By the way the stylish Fujitsu N7010 laptop launched in November 2008 also came with a 4-inch touch screen situated on top of the keyboard). It's a bit small for reading a walkthrough though, probably. Laptopmag.com says that using the secondary display heavily caused a little bit of in-game lag. A video released by laptopmag.com shows Far Cry – 2 on the main screen and a streaming video playing on the small screen at the same time, seamlessly.

Though the Firefly may never come to market, it’s good to see Voodoo is attempting to push the gaming notebook envelope.
