Intel releases Moblin v2.0 beta for netbooks and nettops
Moblin v2.0 features a new and improved GUI, media player, connection manager, and much more
Intel, in association with the Linux foundation and Novell, has recently launched the Moblin v2.0 beta operating system for netbooks and nettops. This means that the user now has more choice and flexibility in choosing the OS, whereas, the competition in the OS arena has just gone tougher.
The Moblin v2.0 beta offers a significant advantage over other OS in terms of better power management, enhanced boot process, and a brand new user interface named the M-Zone. The focus is on providing a better user experience in terms of the internet, social networking activity, and media content.
Moblin v2.0 is built on the latest open source graphics technology, such as Clutter, DRI2, and KMS. It has been specifically designed to work with the Intel Atom processor. The home screen which is named the M Zone provides instant access to calendar, tasks, appointments, recently used files, and real-time updates from friends on social networking sites. The Moblin toolbar hides on the top of the screen and has tools that the user need like: status, instant messaging, internet browser, media player and other applications. It also features a new integrated web browser based on the latest Mozilla browser technology. A ‘Zoomable’ media player allows the user to run through all the media content on the netbook and then zoom in on the desired picture, movie, or audio track. The media player can also detect and index media on external USB devices, as well as UPnP devices on the network. It features an updated connection manager and supports Linux based applications.
Moblin v2.0 beta is available for download (file size is 321MB) from www.moblin.org. Users and developers are free to try this OS and report any bugs that they find through bugzilla or on the developers mailing list which will further help in improving performance and usability. The beta builds would be posted weekly and would be available for downloading.
Intel has tested and confirmed that the Moblin v2.0 runs fine on the following netbooks: Acer Aspire One, Asus Eee PC 901, 1000H, Dell Mini 9, MSI Wind, Lenovo S10, Samsung NC10, and HP Mini 1010.
