The new Pegatron Smartbook – affordable very good smartbook

You get more than you give here – for a change.

The Pegatron Smartbook is a really thin machine, compare it with the 1005HA and you’ll see what I mean. Desire Athow of itproportal could grab a pink prototype for review and he mentions the above in pic.

Powered by a single-core Freescale i.MX515 (ARM Cortex-A8) processor which is clocked at 800MHz, the smartbook supports 2D/3D graphics as well as HD 720P video. It sports an 8.9” display panel with a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. On top of it is a webcam with a microphone on the right. Below it are two speakers, as reported by Desire. Although the system is provided with a brain of 512 MB, but not a belly (aka hard disk), instead an SD card is taking the place. The absences of a fan helps keeping the netbook thin and light enough (850gm makes it about half the weight of the Eee PC here). Although the company claims an 8hr life with the two-cell 4400mAH battery – I totally doubt it.

Desire finds out the keyboard as pretty comfortable and well laid-out. The piece he got runs Ubuntu, which was pretty responsive through-out.

The machine should come for under 200 pounds ($330), and should be available shortly.
