Chrome OS out in 64-bit
The pre-alpha build also comes with Xen hypervisor
Chrome OS has created a new wave in the netbook world recently. It promises a never-before experience of cloud computing that’ll enable one to be constantly in touch with his/her information. The codes were given to the developers on the 25th of last month, inviting them to work parallel with the Google developers to invent ample features, add-ons and plug-ins for Chrome OS. There’s only one difference – they’ll have to be web apps, because Chrome OS, according to Sundar Pichai, Vice President Google Product management, will only support web applications.
In the same conference, they promised Chrome browser for Mac and Linux, also hinted on a 64-bit Chrome OS. Yesterday Chromiumnetbooks.com reported of the release of the 64-bit version of Chrome OS. It features Xen hypervisor which means that one can add other virtual machines running other versions of Linux or Windows to ChromeiumOS64.
As the majority of the netbooks in market support 32-bit OS, the original Chrome OS project was targeted as a 32-bit operating system. But as we move along, many users having x86_64 64-bit machines like 64bit Intel and AMD processors would like to test Chrome OS as well, and for them this new port is a welcome addition, and Google decide to release the 64-bit as an unofficial port of the original project.
The Chrome OS64 download page has both the alpha without Xen and the pre-alpha with Xen hypervisor. They even split the file into 7 parts for ease of download for the unstable internet connections. You can always download the single zip file which is more than a GB. You can check the valid download with the checksum provided. Make sure to read the instructions before installing. The Build was provided by Teo En Ming (Zhang Enming) of Singapore.
In less than a day after Google announced the availability of Chrome OS source code, there were already builds which floating around the internet. But this particular build addresses a niche group which is good because generally we tend to make what more people want.
