Of late, BMW's two-wheeler division (aka BMW Motorrad) has shown an admirable tendency to follow up its 'Vision' concepts with production models quickly—and with surprisingly little dilution of the original designs. Case in point: the BMW CE 02 and CE 04, both of which started out as concepts shortly before their respective launches.
Fast forward to BMW's newest electric two-wheeler concept and we see a similar pedigree: modern, bordering on futuristic design, a focus on urban mobility and accessibility for newer riders. This time, there's also a greater emphasis on safety.
The chassis, with its a long wheelbase, low stance and forward-set footrests, is unmistakably taken from the CE 04. However, the standout feature is clearly the buggy-style cage, which not only encloses the rider in a sort of protective roll cage, but also allows for a seat with a full back, headrest and seat-belt. It is this aspect that, according to BMW, renders a helmet and protective clothing unnecessary. One of the renders also shows a rear-facing radar, likely part of a rear collision warning system for added safety in traffic.
More fascinating, though, is the purported balancing feature, which BMW claims will allow the bike to completely self-balance when stationary. This would aid stability even when riding at slow speeds, something beginner riders typically struggle with. Whether it can be practically included remains to be seen, since the last mention of this feature was for the far more fantastical Vision Next 100 concept.
The ability to mount accessories like auxiliary lights and luggage racks on the cage lends the bike to a variety of purpose-built setups for different needs. A full windshield, roof and wind-deflecting panels for the legs can be added for protection against the elements. There's clearly a lot of modularity and customisability at play in this design.
Performance details have not been discussed at this point, but given that it appears to share the CE 04's platform, it might be useful to mention some of that bike's key specs here for reference:
- Peak Power: ~31 kW (42 hp/42.14 PS)
- Peak Torque: ~62 Nm (~46 lb-ft)
- Top Speed: ~75 mph (120 km/h)
- Battery Capacity: 8.9 kWh (8.5 kWh usable)
- Range (Eco mode): Up to ~130 km (~80 miles)
- Charging time (standard 2.3 kW charger): ~4 hours 20 minutes for a full charge
- Charging time (optional 6.9 kW charger): 45 minutes (80%); 1 hour 40 minutes (full)
- MSRP: $12,195 (base model)
With the added weight of the cage, we can expect a drop in range. That is, of course, if it is based on the CE 04 platform and if it eventually makes it to production. For now, BMW is planning to showcase the Vision CE at the IAA Mobility 2025 show in Munich from September 9-14.
