Lenovo has come dead last in a new analysis that ranks prominent PC OEMs by the reparability of their laptops. Dell, Acer and Microsoft ended up in the middle of the field. Apple attained more mediocre scores for devices such as the MacBook Pro 16, while Asus has emerged as No.1 in the new chart.

The US' Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund has just released the 2025 edition of Failing the Fix, a report on the ease of repairing the country's best-known laptops.

The Group assessed this metric in PCs from the 8 of the most popular OEMs in the US laptop market: Lenovo, Dell, Acer, Microsoft, Apple, Asus, HP and Samsung.

It gathered the French Reparability Index score for as many laptops available in the country as possible per OEM, and adjusted each one by each company's right-to-repair lobbying or campaign activities (for example, being a member of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) resulted in the deduction of half a point) to generate a final "grade" for each company.

Asus attained the best of those in 2025, scoring an even 8.0 (or A-) whereas the average grade was found to be 6.7. Acer was second-best with a B+ (or 7.6), followed by Dell, Microsoft and Samsung with grades of B-.

HP and Apple were next with C and C- scores respectively, while Lenovo got an F as it failed to post a grade at all.

The PIRG 'failed' the OEM as it could find a Reparability Index score (which are completed voluntarily) for only 1 Lenovo-brand laptop, compared to 9 or 10 for the other OEMs.

The Group also reported a marked variability in repair-friendliness from laptop to laptop: for example, the $649.99 Dell Inspiron 16 6540 was found to have a "disassembly score" of 20/20, compared to 6.5/20 for the $1,434.99 M2 Pro-based MacBook Pro 16.

The Group did not address whether the design of less conventional PCs such as the Zenbook Duo or Aspire Spin 14 affected its grading system.

In any case, reparability is an increasingly important metric to track as consumers look for more value for money and resilience in the electronics that they choose to buy.
