Asus currently has the fastest compact gaming laptop on offer in the form of the ROG Zephyrus G14, but the lack of an RTX 5090 is still a disappointment. Can Razer match or perhaps even overtake Asus with the new Blade 14?

The 2023 model of the ROG Zephyrus G14 was a unique laptop, boasting a 125-watt GeForce RTX 4090 GPU in a compact 14-inch device. In 2024, the design was changed in favor of a slimmer chassis and the significantly weaker RTX 4070 GPU, as was the case with virtually all other 14-inch gaming laptops on the market. For 2025, however, Asus has improved the cooling and now offers models with the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5080 GPU with a TGP of 120 watts. This makes the new G14 the most powerful 14-inch laptop currently, and we do not know of any direct competitors that also have the fast RTX 5000 GPUs. The announcement of the new Razer Blade 14 is still pending; Razer may even be able to outdo Asus here.

If Asus is already going to the trouble of creating a second case variant with improved cooling for faster GPUs, this raises the question of why a variant with the RTX 5090 Laptop is not on offer. With a maximum TGP of 95 watts + 25 watts Dynamic Boost, the RTX 5090 Laptop could have easily been installed without issue. In addition to the slightly higher performance, content creators in particular would have benefited from the additional VRAM. If Razer launches a more powerful version of the Blade 14, it may well overtake Asus here and there would certainly be buyers, even if the price is likely to be very steep.

Until then, the new ROG Zephyrus G14 remains at the top of the performance league, although the old G14 with the RTX 4090 laptop still performs excellently. Apart from the more powerful GPUs, the updates to the current G14 are minor, as nothing has changed in terms of connectivity, the OLED display or the input devices. The battery life is slightly better and the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 offers slightly more CPU performance and, thanks to the fast NPU, it is a Copilot+ laptop (if that is important to you). As it stands, it is one of the best all-rounders on the market.
