The Apple iPhone 17 Air is set to replace the iPhone 16 Plus in Apple's upcoming 2025 lineup. According to rumors, the smartphone could have a similarly sized display, but the chassis is expected to be significantly thinner with a thickness of just 0.22 inches. In order to make this possible, Apple is reportedly dropping the ultrawide camera and opting for a much smaller battery.
This exact battery has now appeared in photos published by the MajinBuOfficial. According to the leaker, this battery has a capacity of 2,900mAh, which means it would be a whopping 38% smaller compared to the iPhone 16 Plus (refurbished from $597 on Amazon). Apple’s more efficient A19 chipset and in-house Apple C1 5G modem should ensure reasonable battery life despite the lower battery capacity.
While the battery is small, it sports a metal case just like the one found in the iPhone 16 Pro. This supposedly has two noteworthy advantages. First, the heat generated during charging can be better distributed and more effectively dissipated, which can speed up charging and potentially extend the battery's lifespan. Second, the metal shell simplifies repairs.
According to the repair experts at iFixit, the more robust casing makes it harder to accidentally puncture or bend the battery, which can lead to a fire in worst-case scenarios. According to MajinBuOfficial, the battery's metal case also helps ensure that the iPhone 17 Air does not bend too easily despite its sleek chassis.
