Apple iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max prediction reveals another significant camera upgrade ↺
Apple has confirmed the iPhone 14 series for a September 7 launch. The phones are expected to see some design changes, with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max touted to land with 48 MP main cameras. It appears, however, that another camera improvement may be planned.
As revealed by Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max could also see significant improvements to their ultra-wide cameras. The industry insider claims the phones will come equipped with a new sensor for the ultra-wide-angle shooter, with a pixel size of 1.4µm. Comparatively, the ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 13 Pro models had a 1.0µm pixel size. Assuming that sensor is a 12 MP one, that guarantees a sensor size increase in excess of 30%.
For some perspective, the iPhone 12 Pro featured a main camera sensor with a 12 MP resolution and 1.4µm pixel size. That will likely be the same specifications as the tipped ultra-wide cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro models, with improvements in lens technology and imaging software all but guaranteeing that the iPhone 14 Pro phones take better pictures with their ultra-wide-angle cameras than the iPhone 12 Pro managed with its main camera.

I predict two iPhone 14 Pro models' ultra-wide cameras will upgrade to 1.4µm (vs. iPhone 13 Pro's 1.0µm). CIS (CMOS image sensor), VCM (voice coil motor), and CCM (compact camera module) have a significant unit price increase in this upgrade, with about 70%, 45%, and 40%.
