The Apple iPhone SE (4th generation) will apparently be based on the Apple iPhone XR. The claim was made by YouTuber Jon Prosser in a recent podcast during a segment about future iPhones. If this is the case, then the iPhone SE 2023 (or iPhone SE 4) will not feature a home button and should offer much better battery life than the iPhone SE 3.

A surprising iPhone-related revelation has been offered up by the tipster and YouTube host Jon Prosser during a recent episode of the Geared Up podcast. Show host Andru Edwards was discussing different variants of the iPhone and mentioned that he would like to see the iPhone mini line possibly revisited for the next iPhone SE. This elicited the following comment from Prosser (around the 42-minute mark), “the SE 4 from what I understand, and I don’t think I’ve said this publicly, is just the iPhone XR”.

There are expectations for an Apple iPhone SE 4 to turn up on the market early next year, and it would be a shock to some if Prosser’s source is accurate. The iPhone SE models are usually based on earlier iPhones in terms of design but come with beefed-up innards: The iPhone SE looked like the iPhone 5S but came with an A9 chip instead of an A7; the iPhone SE 2 apes the iPhone 8 in design but sports an A13 SoC instead of an A11; and the iPhone SE 3 used its predecessor as inspiration but came with an A15 processor. If Apple goes with an iPhone XR design, then the home button will be a goner, bezels will be slimmed-down, and the iPhone SE 2023 could even end up with a 6.1-inch display.

Obviously, Apple would gift the next-generation iPhone SE with an upgraded SoC (the XR has an A12 Bionic), but it would be another surprise if this ended up being the A16, rather than perhaps a more-refined variant of the A15. In addition, the potential iPhone SE 4 could offer IP67 water resistance, Face ID functionality, and a much-improved battery life. However, the choice will likely split opinion, as a 6.1-inch iPhone SE 2023 would disappoint those who prefer compact sizes over updated designs, but the likely low price-point (compared to a regular iPhone) will attract those who liked the Apple iPhone XR but didn’t want to shell out US$749 for it back in 2018 (equivalent to buying a ~US$900 phone in 2022).
