Reviews for the Apple iPad Mini 3

88% Apple iPad Mini 3 Tablet Review | Notebookcheck
Mini update. The changes of the new iPad Mini 3 are small: You only get a fingerprint reader. Otherwise, it is virtually identical with its predecessor. Our review shows why the iPad Mini 3 is still a very good tablet.

A sleek, light and fast 8in tablet with a heavy sense of deja vu. Despite the minimal changes over its predecessor, the iPad Mini 3 is still a very good tablet. The problem is that the iPad Mini 2 is still available and the 16GB model costs £239 which is £80 less than the equivalent Mini 3 - a real bargain.

As Apple in the UK tend to be very tight with review items until now my only foray into their world is via an ancient iPod that is too old to be updated to anything like recent firmware. So this courtesy of Vodafone is my first use of an iPadthe Mini 3. My first thoughts were not printable as I needed to enter username and password so many times then confirm all the same information numerous times as well.

Spend the cash, get the new model
Source: Macworld.co.uk English Archive.org version
On the whole, we think the faster components of the iPad mini 4 are well worth the additional spend. It'll get software upgrades from Apple for a longer time thanks to the slightly faster chipset and additional RAM. Spend the additional cash and get the new model.

What’s the difference between Apple’s tablets?
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
The iPad mini 4 is the “best” iPad mini, but that’s from a technical standpoint. If you’re happy to trade off performance, screen quality, camera quality, and a Touch ID sensor (plus the more subtle differences in the table) then the £100 saving on the iPad mini 2 means it could be the one for you. The upgrades arguably make the mini 4 worth that extra £100 and it will no doubt be a more future-proof purchase if you care about being able to upgrade to the latest version of iOS. We expect the mini 4 to get at least the next two versions – iOS 10 and iOS 11. The iPad mini 3 is only a good deal if you can find a refurbished model at a low price – i.e. not much more than the equivalent iPad mini 2.

Apple iPad Mini 3 vs Google Nexus 7 (2013): pocket-sized tablet comparison
Source: Android Authority English Archive.org version
As much as the iPad Mini 3 is the clear winner in performance, do not underestimate the Nexus 7 and the Android ecosystem. Plainly put, if we shift focus to determine the winner in a bang-for-the-buck perspective, the Nexus 7 is the tablet to beat. Also important to note that many have invested heavily into either the iOS or Android ecosystems, I would always recommend leaning toward the tablet that is from the ecosystem you’ve previously invested in, unless you are in the mood for a new way of doing things. Android fans, be sure to check out the Nexus 9 if you want more horsepower.

The iPad Mini 3 is a gorgeous, beautifully crafted tablet and it houses one of the best tablet ecosystems around. However, it is far too similar to last year's model and, for this reason, cannot be considered an update. Save some money and go for the iPad Mini 2.

iPhone 6 Plus vs iPad Mini 3 review
Source: V3.co.uk English Archive.org version
Having won four rounds to the iPad Mini 3's one, the iPhone 6 Plus is the clear winner of this head-to-head review. Featuring a crisper display, more up to date design, improved A8 processor and reworked camera sensor, the iPhone 6 Plus is an excellent device. However, it's important to note that many of the rounds resulted as draws owing to the two devices' inherently different uses. The iPhone 6 Plus is definitely a phablet, unlike devices such as the Asus Fonepad, but it doesn't function as a full-on tablet replacement.

Apple iPad mini 3 review: A touch of gold
Source: GSM Arena English Archive.org version
On its own, the Apple iPad mini 3 is great all-round tablet. It has everything a slate of its caliber should offer - a minimalistic design, an amazing attention to detail, an excellent display. All that backed by the fluid iOS 8 and the amazing App Store variety makes for an overall excellent slate. There's no escaping the fact however that the Apple iPad mini 3 is just a minor update over the previous generation and since the iPad mini 2 can still be found at a noticeably cheaper price makes the new arrival that bit harder to sell.

As we said at the start, this review is one that’s largely positive, but with the price overshadowing the tablet. This is largely because Apple has left the iPad Mini 2 on sale, which is identical, bar TouchID, the Apple SIM, Gold colour and storage sizes. If you want a 16GB model you can buy the Wi-Fi iPad Mini 2 for £239; the iPad Mini 3 costs £80 more at £319. That’s a lot of money for some fairly minor changes.

Apple iPad mini 3 video review - and why we could have used last year's iPad mini 2 footage

The iPad mini 3 is Apple's latest small tablet, but it's hard to spot the differences from last year's iPad mini. Here's our iPad mini 3 video review. That's because there aren't many. The most important update is the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, which you can use to unlock the iPad and buy apps and media from Apple’s iTunes shop.

Apple iPad Air 2 vs Apple iPad mini 3
Source: Phone Arena English Archive.org version
Separated by only $100, it’s really tough for us to recommend going with the iPad mini 3 – even though it’s the cheaper of the two models, at $399. It’s even tougher to swallow knowing that it doesn’t see any major improvements, or differences, with its own predecessor. Flipping it around, the $500 cost of the iPad Air 2 makes plenty of sense, since it’s boasting the better internals and performance. At the same time, we have to point out that the iPad Air 2’s larger size makes it more ideal for certain things – such as typing up documents, surfing the web, and watching videos. And best of all, it’s incredibly thin with its construction!

80% iPad mini 3 review: New iPad gets Touch ID but not much more

The iPad mini 3 is a great tablet in almost every way, and if that verdict sounds familiar, it's because that was our conclusion about the iPad mini 2. Apart from the Touch ID fingerprint reader and the option of a gold-coloured back, there's no difference between the two models. Apple now offers the mini 2 (in 16 or 32GB versions) for just £239 and £279 respectively, representing a significant £80 saving over the equivalent iPad mini 3. In our view, that makes the old model the better choice for most people.

Apple made some questionable decisions with the iPad Mini 3 as the device is really just the same as the iPad Mini 2 but with the TouchID sensor built into it. This makes it a very hard choice to recommend based on its performance and pricing. You essentially will pay $100 just for the TouchID sensor and the change for a gold color. Buyer's would be better off to look at the previous iPad Mini 2 or the iPad Air.

As we try to think dearly about Apple’s intent with the iPad mini 3, we’re still having trouble rationalizing the reasoning behind its $400 cost. In all fairness, it’s a pricey investment considering that the only notable new addition is the Touch ID fingerprint sensor – while the rest of the tablet largely remains the same. In fact, it sport’s the same Retina Display, iSight camera, and processor of its predecessor, which of course, is still quite a formidable thing, especially for something that’s now attached with a $300 cost.

The main surprise Apple has thrown here is keeping the iPad mini 2 on sale. It's a good tablet made great with a much lower price point, and everything the mini 3 has going for it is packed into that model... and it's cheaper. If you've simply GOT to have the best tech and money is no object, the mini 3 is still one of, if not the, best smaller tablets on the market, despite the ageing components. But if you fancy slinging that extra cash on a new jacket or just having a super night out, you won't notice the difference between the two for a long while yet.

The iPad mini 3 isn't a bad tablet. It's got a great OS, new features and is still attractively designed. It's just all these features are available on the mini 2 for a lot less money. iPad mini 3 Review – Refinement not Revolution

There's likely to be juggling ahead in Apple's iOS line-up. The larger iPhone 6 Plus arguably treads on the iPad mini's toes now, while the iPad Air 2's even more waifish form-factor leaves it increasingly portable. Nonetheless, for those who want a compact tablet, strong battery life, a solid display, and the growing convenience of Touch ID, Apple Pay, and the well-stocked App Store, the iPad mini 3 is king of its niche. How that niche will evolve over the next 12-18 months remains to be seen.

Model:

When Apple released its iPad Mini 2, it was the epitome of portable functionality. However, the newly released iPad Mini 3 has been meeting with lukewarm responses as many perceive that the improvements added are not all that attractive. One of the leading new options its new gold color, in addition to the silver and space gray.

Apple is extremely proud of its 7.9 inch backlit Retina display, which packs a 324 ppi pixel density and resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels. The brilliant display is razor sharp and highly detailed, suitable for watching videos or movies and viewing your favorite pictures. It is built to be large enough to view HD visuals, but compact enough to fit into the palm of one’s hand with a length of 200 mm in length, a width of 134.7 mm and a height of 7.5 mm.

Depending on which model is chosen, the weight ranges from 331 g to 341 g. Another outstanding feature unique to the iPad Mini 3 is its Touch ID security for added security due to fingerprint recognition. Additionally, there is a second generation 64 bit A8X processor that can support up to 2 GB RAM, as well as the new iSight and FaceTime cameras developed by Apple themselves. However, if one is looking for the same set of features for less cost, the iPad Mini 2 would be a wiser alternative.
