There is speculation that the Tesla Cybertruck could end up being sold cheaper than what is expected due to a recent tweet made by Elon Musk. Price tags for the Cybertruck variants have been announced in the past but competitive price-cutting by rivals may shake things up before the angular truck finally becomes widely available.

Elon Musk’s comments on Twitter are often carefully scrutinized, especially when they might be about Tesla or the long-awaited Cybertruck, and the same has happened for a recent post he made about Ford. As we reported, Ford has decided to chop the amount required to buy one of its F-150 Lightning trucks, leaving it with a starting price of US$49,995. Despite this discount, Musk seems to think the price is still too high:

The Ford Lightning is a good vehicle, just somewhat expensive, especially given the high interest rates these days for any kind of loan.

Of course, it might just be an offhand opinion from the current wealthiest person in the world, but many of his followers have already jumped to the conclusion that this means the Tesla Cybertruck will come in cheaper than expected. When prices were announced in 2019 the base model was to be sold at US$39,990 with higher trims coming in at US$49,990 (dual-motor) and US$69,990 (tri-motor). But those disappeared as production issues appeared, so the Cybertruck’s price is still something of a mystery.

If Musk believes US$49,995 is “somewhat expensive” for a rival then it’s reasonable to presume there are plans to sell the Tesla Cybertruck at a price below the US$50,000 mark, although it’s unclear what configuration this would be for. It has been mentioned that the cheaper US$39,990 model has already been scrapped, which would leave the dual-motor Cybertruck as the entry-level unit. It has been four years since a price of US$49,990 was associated with that particular trim, so it will be quite an achievement if Tesla can still manage to send it to market with a sub-US$50,000 price tag.
