iPhone 20 Pro leak hints at Apple’s biggest display shake-up in years

Apple may be preparing its first meaningful increase in iPhone Pro display size and resolution in several generations. According to Digital Chat Station, early iPhone 20 Pro and iPhone 20 Pro Max prototypes are being tested with slightly larger panels, alongside a new quad-curved design and a smaller display cutout. The leak comes after months of speculation from DCS hinting at a screen size increase for Apple's next-gen iPhones. 

The leaker claims that the iPhone 20 Pro is currently being tested with a 6.41-inch display carrying a resolution of approximately 2,686 x 1,236 pixels. The larger iPhone 20 Pro Max reportedly moves to a 6.96-inch panel with a resolution of roughly 2,912 x 1,340 pixels. Digital Chat Station states that these are early specifications and could change before production.

In contrast, the iPhone 17 Pro uses a 6.3-inch OLED panel with a 2,622 x 1,206-pixel resolution, while the iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display at 2,868 x 1,320 pixels. Apple rates both at 460 PPI. It wasn’t any different this time around: the iPhone 18 Pro still has a 6.3-inch, 2,622 x 1,206-pixel display, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max retains the 6.9-inch, 2,868 x 1,320-pixel panel with the same 460 PPI pixel density.

If true, the iPhone 20 Pro would grow by around 0.1 inches over both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s increase is smaller, moving from an actual 6.86-inch panel on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max to a claimed physical size of 6.96 inches. Digital Chat Station suggests Apple could market that panel as a 7-inch display. DCS's figures imply both iPhone 20 Pro displays will remain at roughly 460 PPI, preserving the density of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro while increasing usable display area.

The physical panel may not be the biggest change, either. Digital Chat Station says Apple is testing a "borderless" quad-curved display design for the iPhone 20 Pro series, along with a smaller hole in the display that could further reduce the footprint of the Dynamic Island. The current iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max still officially feature the Dynamic Island despite earlier rumours surrounding under-display Face ID. Ice Universe posted a mock-up of what the iPhone 20 Pro could look like. 

The idea of a nearly borderless smartphone is hardly new. Xiaomi’s original Mi Mix kicked off the modern all-screen race in 2016, while devices such as the Vivo NEX, Oppo Find X and Honor Magic 2 later used pop-up or sliding camera systems to eliminate notches and minimise bezels. Apple’s rumoured approach appears quite different, however. Rather than hiding the camera hardware mechanically, the company is reportedly shrinking the display cutout while testing a quad-curved panel that could visually wrap towards all four edges.

Digital Chat Station also claims Apple currently intends to skip the iPhone 19 name altogether, with the 2027 generation instead arriving as the iPhone 20 series, similar to what it did with the iPhone X as its tenth-anniversary iPhone. That would coincide with the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone, making the larger and more visually ambitious display design particularly plausible as a generational redesign and, if market conditions prevail, a generational price increase.
